Therampageofamadmanwhohasneverbeencaught;theelusivecipherslayerwhogripped thenationinfear,AmericasveryownJacktheRipper.Hepubliclyclaimed13victims,thenmore, twodozenmore.Policepinnedhimwithseven,fivedead.Thetruebodycountmayneverbeknown. Onethingiscertain:Thatcountincludestheliving.

BasedonthetruestoryofaserialkillerwhoterrifiedtheSanFranciscoBayAreaandtaunted authoritiesinfourjurisdictionswithhisciphersandlettersfordecades,Zodiacisathrillerfrom DavidFincher,directorofSe7enandFightClub.Huntingdownthehunterwouldbecomean obsessionforfourmen,anobsessionthatwouldturnthemintoghostsoftheirformerselves,their livesbuiltanddestroyedbythekillersendlesstrailofclues. Ofthefour,RobertGraysmith(JakeGyllenhaal)wasthewildcard. Ashyeditorialcartoonist,Graysmithdidnthavethecacheandexpertiseofhisseasonedand cynicalcolleaguePaulAvery(RobertDowneyJr.),theSanFranciscoChroniclesstarcrimereporter. HedidnthaveAverysconnectionswithSanFranciscoPoliceDepartmentscelebratedand ambitiousHomicideInspectorDaveToschi(MarkRuffalo)andhislowkey,meticulouspartner InspectorWilliamArmstrong(AnthonyEdwards).Whathedidhavewasacrucialinsightnoone anticipated.ItfirstappearedAug.1,1969. AcrudelywrittenLettertotheEditorarrivedinthedayspileofmail.Oneofthreepennedto theChronicle,theSanFranciscoExaminerandtheVallejoTimesHerald,itscontentsbroughtthe newsroomstoastandstill.DearEditor,ThisisthemurdererofDavidFaradayandBettyLou JensenshottodeathDec.20,1968onLakeHermanRoadinSolanoCountyandtheJuly4,1969fatal shootingofDarleneFerrinandattemptedmurderofMikeMageauattheBlueRockSpringsgolf courseparkinglotinVallejo.Hedidntcallthembyname,buthegavealaundrylistofdetailsonly thepolicecouldknow.Eachpaperwasgivenpartofacipherwhich,whendecoded,would purportedlyrevealhisidentity.Itwasfollowedbyathreatpublishormorewouldperish.No killersinceJacktheRipperhadwrittenthepressandtauntedthepolicewithcluestohisidentity. ZodiachadraisedthebarforhomicidalpsychopathsintheU.S.ASalinascoupledecodedthe

message.ButitwasGraysmith,acipherenthusiast,whodecodeditshiddenintent,areferencetothe 1932filmTheMostDangerousGame. Morelettersandthreatswouldfollow.OnSept.27,1969Zodiacwouldstrikeagain,hooded andarmedwithagunandsheathedblade,hewouldstabtodeathCeciliaAnnShepardandleavefor deadBryanHartnellastheyoungcouplepicnickedatLakeBerryessainNapaCounty.Onemonth later,Oct.11thekillerhadcometoSanFrancisco.TaxidriverPaulLeeStinewasshotinthebackof theheadintheposhPresidioHeightsneighborhood.Threedayslaterafifthletterarrived,themost ominousofall:Zodiactoldpolicetheycouldhavecaughthimthatnight.Worse,schoolchildren wereinthecrosshairsofhisgunsight.Hewouldpickthemoffastheysteppedofftheschoolbus. SanFranciscowasliterallyacityinpanic. ZodiacinadvertentlyhadturneddetectivesToschiandArmstrongandreporterAveryinto overnightcelebrities.CharactersbasedonToschiwouldprovepivotalroleslaunchingthreemovie starscareers.Graysmithremainedcommittedtohisarmchairsleuthingfromthesidelines,injecting hisinputwhenAverywouldallow.Zodiacwasalwaysonestepahead,coveringhistracks, pepperinghisletteredtauntswithmorethreats.Andthentheybecamepersonal. InfamywouldeclipsefameasToschifellfromgrace;Armstrong,frustratedmovedon;Avery leftthepaper,crippledbyhisaddictions.Zodiacwouldnolongerrevealhistargets.Copycats sprangupcoasttocoast.Thekeysuspectwasstilloutthere. Graysmithsmomenthadcome.Thatmomentwouldchangetheirlivesforever. Ifyougrewupthere,atthattime,youhadthischildhoodfearthatyoukindofinsinuated yourselfintoit.Whatifitwasourbus?Whatifheshowedupinourneighborhood?Youcreate evenmoredramaaboutitwhenyoureakidbecausethatiswhatkidsdo.IgrewupinMarinand nowIknowthegeographyofwherethecrimestookplace,butwhenyoureingradeschool,children dontthinkaboutthat.Theythink,`Hesgoingtoshowupatourschool. WelcometoDavidFincherssecondgradenightmare. LikemanychildrenwhogrewupintheBayareaintheearly`70s,directorDavidFincher,then 7,wasspellboundbytheinvisiblemonsterknownonlyastheZodiac. IrememberaskidstalkingaboutthekillercallinginontheDunbarShow.In1974,we movedawayandIrememberrealizingthatotherplaces,otherpeopleknewabouttheZodiackiller, Fincherrecalls.Neverinhiswildestdreamsdidheimaginethatthreedecadeslaterhewouldbe askedtoenvisionafilmthatwouldprompthimto:Retracethekillersstepswithseveralofthe officerswhotrackedthemostnotoriouskillerofhisyouth;Combthrough10,000pagesofdocuments andevidence;Interviewthevictimswhosurvived,thelovedonesofthosewhodidntandthe relativesofaprimesuspect.Atthattime,thatprimesuspectwasaformerteacherturnedpedophile, firedandimprisonedforfondlinggradeschoolchildren. Finchertoowouldsuccumbtotheneedtoknow;aneedthatfueledayoungSanFrancisco Chroniclepoliticalcartoonistsobsessiontounravelthemysteryofamurderer.RobertGraysmith wouldchannelthatobsessionintotwobooks,thebestsellerZodiacandfollowupZodiacUnmasked, recountinginminutedetaileveryfactandtormentednuanceoftheunprovenforthoseclosesttothe investigationsinfourjurisdictions,hisderisiveyetengagingcolleaguePaulAveryandhimself. RobertGraysmithknewhewasaguyonthesidelinesofthisstory.Hewantedtobeapartof itandhemadehimselfapartofit,saysFincher.Hewasdoingitonhisowntimebecausehe wasntareporter.ItwasRobertwhowentafteritandaftereverybodyelsehadprettymuchwalked away.Everythingweincludedinthemovie,weusedfromwhatRobertgaveus.But,wehadpolice reportsandwebackedeverythingupwithdocumentation,ourowninterviewsandevidence.Even whenwedidourowninterviews,wewouldtalktotwopeople.Onewouldconfirmsomeaspectsof itandanotherwoulddenyit.Plus,somuchtimehadpassed,memoriesareaffectedandthedifferent tellingofthestorieschangeperception.Sowhentherewasanydoubtwealwayswentwiththe policereports.TheonethingabouttheZodiacstorytooistherearesomanypeopleouttherewho areconvincedRobertiswrongaboutsomethingsandthattheirversionorinterpretationisrightand

therearesomanymythsthatsprangupsoyouhavetokeepallofthatinmindwhenyouaredealing withthestoryofZodiac.Thatiswhywechosetotellthestorythewaywedid,throughRoberts eyes.Mygoalwastocapturethetruthofthosebooks. Inshort,capturingZodiacprovedamassiveundertaking. Whenyoubeginanadaptation,theonlythingyoucanbesureofisyouregonnaendup throwingout5/6thsofyoursourcematerialforthesimplefactthatyoucantfititallin,explains screenwriterproducerJames(Jamie)Vanderbilt.Addtothatthefactsthatthemovieisbasedon twobooks,aswellasatonofinterviews.Theonethingwehadgoingforusisthatthemovieisabout theseguyswhogetsuckeddowntherabbitholeoftheZodiaccase,Graysmithinparticular,butalso thedetectivesandareporter.Thedearthofinformationworkedforus,becausetherewasalways anotherconversationtobehad,theorytobediscussed,suspecttoexamine.Ithinkthemovieitselfis oneofthemost`informationallypackedIveeverseen,anditdoesntevenscratchthesurfacein termsofthesheervolumeofmaterialoutthere. ThebiggestdifferencebetweenthebooksandthefilmisGraysmithhimself,Vanderbiltsays. RobertdoesntputhimselfatthecenteroftheZodiacbooks,butitwashisinvolvementthat firstfascinatedmethecartoonistascrimestopper,saysVanderbilt.`WhatifGarryTrudeauwoke uponemorningandtriedtosolvetheSonofSamwashowIusedtopitchittheideaforascreen adaptationofZodiac,hisfavoritebookinhighschool.GettingtoknowRobertduringthisprocess wasactuallyinvaluablebecausethescriptchangedaswebecamefriends;andveryrarelyinorderto makehimlookbetter.Roberttrulyinvitedusintohislifewartsandall,andthatshowIthinkwe endedupportrayinghimonscreen.ThegreatthingaboutRoberttheartististhatherecognizesthe valueinthat,heunderstandsthecreativeprocessandwhatmakesagoodstory. JakeGyllenhaalwasdrawntothestorybytheimmediacyofthedramainthepageturnerofa scripthereceivedfromDavidFincher,hesays.Andthenhewastotallyhookedbyitsverisimilitude. ThefirsttimeIreadthescript,themurders,inparticular,wereterrifying,hesays.Iremember flippingthroughthepagesandthinking,Thisisreal,thisactuallyhappened.Iimmediatelywanted todoit. Atthestartofthestory,RobertGraysmithexistsontheperipheryofthecase.Hesa cartoonist,anintern,attheSanFranciscoChronicle.Hehappenstobeintheroomwhenthepaperis sentacipherandaletterfromtheZodiacKilleraskingthemtoprintthecipher.Hesturningin copiesofdifferentcartoons.Butlittledotheyknowhessortofobsessedwithpuzzlesand decipheringthings.Hebecomesreallyinterestedinthecaseandthen,yearslater,whenthecaseis notsolved,hetakesituponhimself,undertheguiseofwritingabookaboutit,totryandsolvethe caseonhisown. Ithinkwhatismostinterestingaboutthisstoryisthatwhensomethinglikethishappens theresmasshysteria.Andthenitsgiventotheexperts.Andsometimestheexpertsdonthavethe sameheartthatjustakindofaregularguylikeRobertGraysmithwouldhave.Theyalsohaveso

muchredtapetogothrough,allthejurisdiction.Robert,asortofregularpersonoffthestreet, doesnthavetogetawarrantforthis,orpermissionforthat.Theycanjustgooutofpureheartand pure,inRobertscase,obsession.Ithinkthatsfascinatingbecausewerelylessandlessonourselves, youknow.Werelyonexpertsopinions,andsooftentheyretingedwithsomanyotherpolitical thingsandthingsrelatedtotheirownworkandwheretheywanttogo.Aregularpersonlike Robert,youredoingtheworkonyourown,thetruehardfactscomemuchmoreclearly.Tome,its anempoweringthing,toknowthattheresthissortofregularguy,whocouldjust,couldbreakopen acasethatpeoplefoundimpossible,tosolve. Howdidtheactorpreparefortheroleoftheboldcartoonist?Gyllenhaalsmethodwas deliberateandscientific.RobertGraysmithisaninterestingbird,Iwouldsay.WhenIfirstmethim IhadtoldhimthatIwasgoingtoputhimontapebecauseIwantedtostudyhismannerismsandjust physically,Iwantedtoseehowhebehaved.Iwasactuallyreallynervous.Ithoughttomyself,Oh, well,whatkindofpersonalitydoesthisguyhavetohaveinordertogointothisworld?AndI thought,Imgoingtomeetthisguyanditsgonnabelikethisweird,darkexchange.Whatworld amIgoingtohavetogotowithhiminordertogetsometruthoutofhim?Andhewalksintothe roomandhesthislikesweet,unassuming,constantlycomplimentary,kindofinnocentman. And,everythingtheytellyouinactingschool,like,youshouldalwaysplaytheopposite. Thatsexactlywhatheis.Hestheoppositeofeverythingyouwouldassumetobeapersonwho wouldbeobsessedwithacaselikethis.Butthen,asyouspendmoretimewithhim,thereisasense of,ifhewantstogetapieceofinformationoutofyouandyouhaventansweredthefirsttime becauseitsalittletoocloseoralittletoopersonal,helltheninsertitinthisodd,syncopatedway,so thatyouansweritandyoudontevenknowyoureansweringit.Heisverysmart,andalsoatthe sametime,kindofcunning,whenhewantstogetinformation.But,asahumanbeing,hesagentle guy.Itsreallyinteresting. IwatchedJakeinterpretmycharacteronseveraloccasions,notesGraysmith.Hewasnot doinganimpersonationofmebutaninterpretationofme.Ithoughthecaughtmyenthusiasmand excitability,mySouthernupbringing,politedeferenceandeccentricitiesperfectly.Wealreadyhad thesamecolorofhair. Asforcapturingthesweepofanera,somethingmorethanjustarecreationofastorytelling experience,hesaysheandVanderbiltwereonthesamepage.Attheriskofbecomingtoo`meta, Vanderbiltadds,Therewassomethingverycooltomeaboutthemovieregardingthepowerof wordsthewriterwritingaboutthewriterwhowaswritingaboutthekillerwhobecamefamous becausehewasagreatletterwriter.BecausethatsreallythereasonZodiacremainswithustoday, hewrotescaryfuckinglettersandnottothecops,buttootherwriters.Newspaperguyswhowent, Oh,shit,thisisprettygood.Weshouldrunit.Sotheydid,andpeoplereadthoseletters,and werestilltalkingabouthimdecadeslater.Thepowerofthewrittenword.

Graysmithwrotehisfirstpersondiaries(ZodiacandZodiacUnmasked)becausehewantedto enlistthepublicintrackingdownthekiller.Whenhebegan,therewere2,500suspectstosiftthrough andawallofsilencetobreech,herecalls.Inthosedays,policewerentsharing.Zodiacwasabig, bigcaseandthemanwhosolveditwasgoingtobeanace,sotheyclampeddownonallinformation. ItwascommonforthemtoholdrecordssoIcouldnotseethemandifIgotcloseenoughtothetruth aswetalked,theywouldverifyafactortwo.IwasalsonotallowedwritingimplementsorpapersoI hadtocommitserialnumbersanddatestomemory.Itmadeforratherlongandspiritedsessions afterwardwritingdownallIcouldrecall.After10years,13draftsandreducingamountainof researchintohis351pagetome,Iguess,mybiggestcontribution,asIuncoverednewleads, conductedinterviewsandtrackeddownmissingwitnessesandsuspects,wastovisiteachpolice department,consolidateallthefactsandsharethemsothatZodiaccouldbecaptured.Thatwas alwayshisgreatesthope,hesaystoday.Whenhereflectsonthetumultuousjourney,itisawonder anyofussurvivedtheZodiac.Thelongpursuit,theirresistiblelureofthecase,itsmystery,tragedy andloss,ruinedmarriages,derailedcareers,demolishedhealthofabrilliantreporter;itwasastudy infrustrationaspolicewerebeatenbacktimeandagain. GyllenhaalcreditsRobertDowneyJr.withprovidingsomespecialenergyonthesetthat

inspiredtheplayerstomakethestorycomealive.RobertDowneyJr.,isextraordinary.Whathes done,andwhathealwaysdoes,isbringapresence,kindofwipethrough.HisPaulAveryiskind ofacourtjesterinthathedancesaroundthingsandhehasthissenseofhumor,almostadetachment fromthesituation,butarealsenseofhumoraboutit.KindoflikeTinkerbellinPeterPan.Hejust shedslightallovereverybodywheneverhefliesaround,Gyllenhaalsays. Fincherfeltveryfortunatetohavethiscast.IfoundthepeopleIwantedtoworkwith.And Iwasveryfortunatetohavemanyoftherealpeoplefromthattimearound.Ithinkwetriedtogive peopletheirduerespect.Butitwasneveraboutduplicatingthemexactly,theirhair,etc.Example: RobertDowneyJr.,whoplaysPaulAvery,istheonlyonewhoplayssomeonethatisnolonger alive.ButIthinkhehassuchenthusiasmandbecauseheissomeonewhocouldreallygraspPauls innerdemons,hewasperfectfortherole. Ofthefourcharacters,itwasToschiwhoknewAverythelongest.ImetPaulAveryin1960 whenIwas28.IwaswiththeBureauofInspectors(fortheSanFranciscoPoliceDepartment)andI wantedtobeadetective,saysToschi.Wesharedalotofhistory.AttheendPaulwasdoing cocaineandhewasonamachine.Hewasinreallybadshape.Hecalledmebeforehepassedaway. Hewantedtowriteabook,aquickpaperbackbeforehediedtoleavetohisgrandchildren.Hesaid, `Davewecanmake$25,000each,justlikethat!Ifeltbadforhim,reallybad.ButItoldhim,Paul,Im committedtoRobertGraysmith.IrememberwhenRobertfirstcametomeandsaid,`Youretheonly guywhohasalloftheinfo,theonlyguyIcantalkto.ImetRobertGraysmithin1977whenhetold mehewantedtowrite.Hereallybelievedthiscasecouldbesolved.Hereallywantedtotry.We haveremainedgoodfriendssince.

ToschisaysFincherwascuriouswhyhetalkedtoGraysmithatall.Thecasewasnolonger activelybeinginvestigatedandGraysmithwasntareporter.Itwasbecauseofhissincerityand honesty,hesays.InacoupleofminutesIknewhewasaboutthat.Hewasthispoliticalcartoonist. Ibelievedhim. Forhispart,MarkRuffalowastotallyimpressedwithToschiandhowFincherportrayedhim inthescript.Idontlovethegenre;itsusuallyprettyviolent,hesays.ButDavidhadwrittenthis scriptthat,whenIreadit,IsawthatthischaracterIwasgoingtobeplayinghadcometolifeina nuanced,beautifulway.ThenItookatriptomeettheguy,andatthatpointIjustfeltsofortunateto bedoingthemovie.Afterall,heisthemodelforactorswhoattempttoplaydetectives,andIam playingtheonethatsomeactorshavemodeledtheircareermakingroleson. AndRobertDowneyJr.isamazing.Ivealwayslovedhimandthinkhesasclosetogenius asyoucancomewithoutfallingovertheedge.Ifounditreallyexcitingtoworkwithhim,andscary andfun.Theresthedangerfactor.Notphysicalorviolentdangeritshisspontaneity. ItwasVanderbiltandPhoenixPicturesProducerBradley(Brad)J.Fischerwhooptionedthe rightstoGraysmithsbookwhenitfinallybecameavailableafterlingeringinlimboatanotherstudio fornearlyadecade.Theyhadonedirectorinmind. IfeltDavidFincherwouldbeabletotellthestoryinawaythatwouldbetruetowhat happenedandgettothepsychologyofwhatmotivatedthepeoplewhoinhabitedthatworld.Hehad obviouslydoneaserialkillermoviebefore,butthiswentbeyondgenre,saysFischer,Therewas somethinginthesecharactersthatexistsinallofus:thecapacityforbecomingconsumedby somethingsofully,thatdayafterday,nightafternight,yearafteryear,youcantevertrulyputit away.Fincherisabletoarticulatethingsabouthumanbehaviorandemotioncinematicallythat makesthecharactersandtheworldtheyinhabitsoincrediblyauthentic.Hecangivetheviewerthat feeling,thattheycouldbewatchingthemselvesupthere,sinkingdownintotherabbitholewithout realizingit.TheDNAofthisstoryhadsomuchtodowiththat,withdegreesofmalevolentdeviant behaviorwhetheryouretalkingaboutaserialkillerorthemenwhoselivesaredrainedinthe pursuitofsomethingthatwillprobablyremainjustoutofreachfortherestoftheirlives.Theres somethingequallyadmirableandsadaboutthat,butmorethanthat,itisamosthumanthingto wanttoknowwhatcantbeknown.Itisacompulsionthatexistsinallofus,andithasthepotential tobeanincrediblydestructiveforce.IknewthatwassomethingFincherwouldbeabletohelpus explorelikenootherfilmmaker. WhatFincherknewisthatthestoryhadtobemadesimpler,clearer,theproducercontinues, elaborating.WhatFincherknewwasthatthematerialweweredealingwith,almosteverythingthat wasoutthereaboutthestoryoftheZodiacinvestigation,itwasallabitdistortedbythismassive gameoftelephone,filteredthroughtheworstlensyoucouldthinkof:newspapers. Thecasehadtakenonitsownmythicproportionsovertheyears,anditwasourjobtoundo allthat;todrawacleanlinebetweenfactandfictionanddemystifywhathadsomehowgrownsofar

beyonditsrootsinreality.Youhavetoremember,itwasthemediathatturnedZodiacintothisall powerfulenigmaImean,hewritesaletterandsays,ThisistheZodiacspeaking,andthenthe newspapersstartcallinghimTheCipherSlayer!Itslikeseeingthisgiganticandterrifyingshadow mutateagainstthewall,andthenyouunderstandthesourceisjustonemanwhoclumsilyshotfive peopleandstabbedtwoothers;andhesnuckuponallofthem.HesnotWileE.CoyoteSuper Genius,aswegrewfondofcallinghim,hesasad,patheticandincrediblysickpersonwhocame withininchesofbeingcaught.Therestwasallinthepublicshead,readyandwaitingforeacheager imaginationtomoldintoamostpowerfuldemon Andso,saysFischer,theprocesswaslonganddifficult,butitwasimportantifwewere goingtotelltherealstory.Soitwasanathematorelyonanysecondaryortertiarysource.Police reportsbecametherule.That,and,ofcourse,thepeoplethatwerethere.Itwasreallyquitesimple: Letsfindeveryonewecanwhowasmateriallyinvolvedintheinvestigation,andletssitdown acrossfromthem,lookthemintheeye,askthemdirectandsometimesdifficultquestions,andthen hearwhattheyhavetosay.SowetalkedtoBryanHartnell;toMikeMageau,whoisnowhomeless andhasntreallyrecoveredsincehewasshotin1969;toDaveToschi;toBillArmstrong;toKen Narlow;toGeorgeBawart.WeputDonCheneyandSandyPanzarellainaroomtogetherforthefirst timesincetheywereinterviewedbypoliceinthe1970sandaskedthemtotelluseverydetailoftheir story.Wedidourbesttogetitright. ProducerMikeMedavoy,PhoenixPicturescofounderandChairman,sayswhatwas interestingaboutthematerialisnotsomuchthatitisaboutaserialkiller,whichisamovieunto itself,butitsaboutthepeoplethatwentaftertheserialkiller.Itiswhathappenswhenyougetso obsessedwithsomethingandyoulosesightofwhattheobjectiveis.Youreboundtogetlostand youreboundtodestroyeverythingalongthewayandithappenedtoeverysingleoneofthem. Graysmithcameback,buthesnolongermarried.Lookatallthethingsthathappenedtothe principalcharacters.Tome,thatswhatsfascinatingaboutthefilm. They,infact,lostthemselvesintheprocessofchasingthestory,Medavoyadds.Davidand BradandJamiethetriodoingtheirowngumshoeworkweremaniacalaboutmakingit accurate.WethoughtBradwasgoingtobecomeapolicemanandquitshowbusiness(notquite)! TheZodiachadstabbedBryanuntilhisbodywentlimp,thenhebeganstabbingCeciliauntil sheplayeddead.Thatswhenhestoppedandwalkedaway,CeciliatoldCollins.Theylayonthe blanketalltiedup.Therewasafishermanoutonthelakenearby.Theystartedscreamingforhelp. InGraysmithsbookZodiac,Hardentoldhowhebrokedownthekillersencryptedmissive. Firsthecheckedforfrequencyofcertainletters.HeknewthatEwasthecommonletterinthe EnglishlanguagefollowedbyT,A,O,N,I,RandS.ThecommondoublelettersareL,EandS, wroteGraysmith.ThelettersmostfrequentlyoccurringtogetherareTH,HEandAN.Morethanhalf ofallwordsbeginwithT,A,O,SorWandthemostcommonthreelettercombinationswereTHE, ING,CONandENT. Hardendecidedthekillerwasusingsubstitutioncipherswhicharesymbolsorfigures,not letters.Sincethekillerhadusedamultitudeofsymbols,aoneforonesubstitutionforletterswasnt possible.Hardenhadtogetcreative,deducethekillersmethodofrepeatingsymbolsandreducethe numberofvariables.ThenithithimthemostcommonlydoubledletterintheEnglishlanguageis L.Sohelookedforfourletterpatternsinthekillerscryptogramthatwouldmeshwiththeword kill. ItwasaftertheHardensbrokehiscodeinhisfirstletterthatthekillerbegancallinghimself theZodiacinsuccessiveletters.Someofthesymbolsprovedperplexing.Graysmithcombedbooks oncodesandciphersandlearnedthekillerusedsomeofthe13thCenturycipherpicturealphabet knownastheZodiacAlphabet.Hewouldalsolearnthatallcodebookshadbeenstolenorwere missingfromarealibrariesincludingtheSanFranciscoPresidio,theTreasureIslandNavalBaseand theOaklandArmyTerminallibraries. Certainly,oneofthemosttantalizingaspectsofthecaseisthestillunbrokenciphersthat Zodiacmailedus,notesGraysmith.Istillholdouthopethatsomeoneseeingthefilmorreading thebookswillbreakthetwocryptogramsandmapthatZodiacsaystellushisnameandlocation.

WhenToschiwouldcomeintothenewspaper,hewasthiskindofalmostHollywoodlikefigure, whowasanidolinsomewaysofRoberts,likesomethingthatcameoffthetelevision,offthecomic bookpageandintoreallife. THEAWEOFIRRESOLUTION Forafilmthatwasnevermeanttohaveasignaturescore,musicwascriticaltothetellingof Zodiac. Itwasmeanttohaveonlyvintagemusic,40signpoststhatwouldkeeptrackoftheZodiac storyspanningnearlyfourdecades.Theywouldattimesserveasaninterludetoacontinuumofthe story,whenthekillerwentunderground. Butitwasnotenough. TheobsessivenaturethattakesoverwithanyaspectoftellingthestoryofZodiachad permeatedthemixsomethingelsewasneeded. Itwasntuntilwegottothesecondandthirdacts,whenwerealizedwehadtotakethe emotionalpartofthefilmtoanotherlevel,explainsSoundDesignerRenKlyce.Firstitwas10 minutes,then20,thenmoreandtherewasnobudgetforascore,onlyforthe40copyrightsfromthe 1960sthroughthelate1980s.Itwasntuntilhepulledtogetherthetemptrack,usingpiecesfrom

FrancisFordCopollasTheConversationandAlanPakulasAllthePresidentsMenthathe knew.HewantedDavidShire,composerofboth.Thisisafilmaboutlosingyourlifeinamystery thatcantbesolved,anditsanewspaperstory,addsKlyce.Eventhoughthestudiowasgettinga senseweneededascore,Isortofhadtodothisundertheradar.DespitethefactthatKlyceand Fincherhadbeenfriendssincetheywere18andhehascomposed,editedorservedassound designeroneveryoneofFinchersfilms,becauseascorehadnotbeenbudgetedforZodiac.I knewmyheadwasonthechoppingblock. Fincherknewthe70yearoldShirewasatalentedcomposer.HetrustedKlycescertainty. ButatfirstIwasntsureIwantedascoreandIknewthatIdidntwantadirge,Ididntwanttoape anythingdonebefore,Finchersays. FincherwasconsistentinthatdeferencetoPakulas1976Oscarnomineethroughoutthe makingofZodiac.IrememberDavidsaidfromthebeginning`Idontwanttomakeanother serialkillermovie.Iwanttomakethelastserialkillermovie.Andontheotherhand,hesaid`itis notreallyaserialkillermovieitisreallyanewspaperstory,saysFischer.Themodelheheldup wasAllthePresidentsMen,whichwasalsoatruestoryaboutarealevent,realpeople.Fincher isquicktonote,AllthePresidentsMeniscertainlymuchmorehighmindedjournalism.But,itis thestoryofareporterdeterminedtogetthestoryatanycostandonewhowasnewtobeingan investigativereporter.Itwasallabouthisobsessiontoknowthetruth. Shirecomposed27minutesofmusicthatplaysthroughoutthefilm.Muchofitplaysonthe escalatingpressureanddiscordbetweenpoliceandthepressanundercurrent,Finchersays,that hadtoplaycarefully. Thefirstchordyouhearisanunresolvednote,saysShire.Thereare12signsoftheZodiac andthereisawayofusingatonalandtonalmusic.Soweused12tones,neverrepeatinganyofthem butmanipulatingthem.Wewerelookingforpatternstoplayoffthefeelingofthestoryitself,the patternsofaserialkiller. Shirestroveforasubtlesuspensescorethatwasdrivingbutnotinanovertway.They wantedthescoretoaddanotherdimensiontothepicture.Themusicisnotjustaboutthescenebut aboutgettinginsidethecharactersheartsandminds.Iwasthinkingabouttheinstrumentstosortof representthecharacters.ThetrumpetwasToschi,thesolopianowasGraysmithandthedissonant stringsweretheserialkillerZodiac. ShiredrewhisinspirationfromAmericanComposerCharlesIves1906masterworkThe UnansweredQuestion.Themultilayeredpieceinvolvesthescoringforastringquartet,a woodwindquartetandasolotrumpeteachlayerwithitsowntempoandkey.Ivescalledita cosmiclandscapewiththestringsrepresentingTheSilencesoftheDruidswhoKnow,Seeand HearNothing.ThetrumpetasksThePerennialQuestionofExistencesixseparatetimesandeach timethewoodwindsseekTheInvisibleAnswerbuteventuallyabandontheeffortinfrustration. ComposerLeonardBernsteinascribedthewoodwindseffortasrepresentingourhumaneffortsthat

growincreasinglyimpatientanddesperatetoanswertheunanswerable,untilfinallyalleffortslose meaning.Intheend,onlytheSilencesholdtheanswer. Thiswholemovieisanunansweredquestion,saysShire.Evenattheendyoudontgetthe answer100percent;evenaftermorethan20yearsandstillyouquestion.Thereisthisaweof irresolutionaboutit. Thatsenseandtensionofuncertaintywasheightenedbytheinclusionofastylethatisa favoriteofKlycemusiqueconcrte.InventedbyPierreSchaefferin1939,itisaFrenchtermthat describeselectronicmusiccomposedofinstrumentalandnaturalsoundsalteredanddistortedinthe recordingprocess.ItwouldlaterinfluencesuchcontemporarymusiciansasFrankZappa,The BeatlesintheirsongRevolution9andPinkFloydsBikefromtheiralbumTheDarkSideofthe Moon. Iwasreallyintothisstyleoftheseguysfromthe`20s,`30sand`40swhokindofredefined sound,saysKlyce.Itskindoflikechoppinguppiecesoftapedmusic,throwingitupintheairand thensplicingthepiecestogether,justanaloguetapingandsplicing. ShiretookhiscuefromKlyce.Musiqueconcrtereallyconsistsoftexturesoftherealsounds oftheworldthatyoumakeintosortofatexturalbedthatrunsunderascene.SoItriedtocomeup withascorethatworkedintandemwithit. Intheend,thescoreheardinthefilmwasperformedbythe54pieceSanFranciscoOrchestras stringsectionandrecordedatSkywalkerSound. Sincethebasicemotionattheheartofthisfilmisobsession,myhopeisthemusiccaptured it,saysShire.Itcapturedhis.

PUSHINGTHEPARADIGM

OneofthegreatthingsaboutworkingwithdirectorslikeDavidwhoaresocreativeisthat yougettolearnalot.Yougettoseewhattheyreupto,whattheyretrying.Theyrealwaysdoing somethinginnovative,somethingyoucanlearnfrom,saysMesser.NoonewasgoingtotellDavid no.Weallwantedtounderstandhowitworked. ItistheThomsonViperFilmstreamCamera,ahighdefinition(HD)videocamerathat marksitsdebutasthedirectorscameraofchoiceforastudiofeaturefilminZodiac.Previouslyit hadbeenusedincommercialsandonsmallerfilms,mainlyforeign.Basicallyitisnoncompressed videothatusesambientlightmoreeffectively. IchosetheViperbecauseIwantedtoseeifitwasproperlynurturedwhatitcoulddo,says Fincher.Ihadshotcommercialswithitbutneverafeature.Ifeltitwastimetotryit.Ilikedthe processofworkingdigitallyandIdidntlikewaitinguntilthenextdaytoseewhatIhadshot.

ThethingaboutDavidFincheristheresverylittlevaguerywithhim,saysTidwell.He knowswhathewants.Insteadofwatchingdailiesalldaylongwereviewingfullresolutioninthe camera,instantly.Anditisthenegative,notavideoregeneration.Itisthemasterfootagethelight digital,theshadowdigital,youseeitontheset.Therearenocolorcorrections.Youtaketheraw datatopostproduction.Tidwellsjobasdatacaptureengineerwascapturingthatdataontothe harddrivewithadigitalfieldrecordermadebyS.TwoCorp. Idontthinkanaudienceisgoingtobeabletotellthedifferenceinitbeingshotdigitallyoronfilm, Finchersays.ThatisnottosayIwouldnevershootfilm.Therearetimeswhenyoudo.Idont thinkIwouldgototheHimalayaswiththeViper,orthedesert,orthejungleanyplacewith extremetemperatures.Thisequipmentisfairlynewanditsnotthatitrequiresacleanroom,itsjust thatyouknowforcertainthatfilmisgoingtowithstandthestressesofworkinginlessthanideal circumstances.And,headds,Ithinkcostsavingsinthefuturewillgrowasweperfecttheprocess. Tidwellsaysitalreadyhas.Wehadconcernsabouttherobustnessoftheequipment.What wefoundisthatwehadfarlessequipmentfailurethanonafilmset.Alltotalwemayhavehad maybe1to1hoursoflostordowntime,herecalls.Withfilmyouhavecamerajamsand sometimeswhenyoureshootingthefilmnegativeyoullfindhairsinthegateorascratchonthe negative.Withthisthereisnogateorfilmnegativetodamagebecausetheimagedatagoesdirectly totheharddrive. DuringthethreeyearsFincherandTidwellwereworkingwiththeViperoncommercials, Finchercameupwithanothercostsavingaspectforfilmmakers.Itisatimesavingfeaturecalledthe autoslate.Thefirst5framesofeachtakehasavisualslate,justlikethephysicalslatethestickyou hitatthe(beginning)ofeveryscene.Thatprocesstakestime,quiteanumberofsecondsanditadds up.Withtheautoslate,thecameramarksitandhitsit.Considerittakesabout10secondsmultiply thatby250to500takesadaythatweveeliminated.Timeismoney.ThatwasDavidsidea,his visionandhehadityearsagodoingcommercials.Hemadeitworkforthis. Buttheingenuitydidntstopthere.FincherbrokegroundwithhiseditingprocessusingFinal CutPro. TheeditingprocesswithFinalCutProwasjusttheideaofusingofftheshelfMac technology,Finchersays.Basically,IwasreallyangryatAVIDbecausetheywerentreally

respondingtowhatfilmmakersneeded.Theydidntseemtocare.Theywerecavalieraboutit.And Applegotintothissideofthebusinessandbuiltthisreallygreatsystemthatworks.Itissimpleand directanditcutcosts. FromEditorAngusWallsperspective,thistechnologymakesaneditoralmostentirelyself reliantanditisgreat,somuchmoreefficient.Itissimplerbecauseyourepluggedintothe productiondaytoday.Andtheresnochemicalwastelikeyouhavewithfilmandthatsimportant. Wehavehadsomuchinterestfromyoungfilmmakersonhowweusedthisequipment.Onewoman fromAmericanSamoamakingadocumentarywantedtoknowallabouttheequipmentusedandthe process. However,withtheavailabilityofSTwodigitalfieldrecordersandThomsonsVenomdatarecorders, filmmakerscanchoosetocapturetherawdata.Theserecordersarehighcapacity,highspeed recordersthatareabletohandletheHDdatauncompressed.Asaresult,filmmakerscanmodifythe dataasmuchastheywishwithoutdegradingtheimage.Plus,filmmakershaveaccesstothefull rangeofimagecontrolsavailablefrompostproductiontoolsratherthanbeinglimitedbythein cameraimagecontrols.
