I Have a Dream

Martin Luther King Juniors speech I have a Dream was spoken on August 28, 1963, in which he called for an end to racism in the United States. It was delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps on Lincoln Memorial. His words were very influential and it helped the African-American people to be judged the same as the white people. We thank him to this very day by honoring him with a national holiday on every 3rd Monday of January.

Nobel Peace Prize

Martin Luther King Jr. dreamt that all the people of the United States should be judged by their personality and not by the color of their skin. In April 1968, a white racist murdered him. Four years before that, he had gotten the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent campaign against racism.

National Holiday
The fight to make Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s birthday a holiday took 32 years. Officially his birthday was approved as a federal holiday in 1983. He was born on January 15, 1929, but the holiday is marked on the third Monday of every January. By 2000, all 50 states recognized his birthday as a national holiday.
