Thomas Jefferson defined a noninterventionist

foreign policy as “Peace, commerce, and honest
friendship with all nations — entangling alliances
with none.”
But today, ambitious and/or naive politicians
have committed America’s blood and treasure to
worldwide crusades for peace, equality, and social
justice. It is impossible, however, for America to
forcefully impose these ideas on the rest of the
world.
Furthermore, nothing in the Constitution grants
the President or Congress the power to influence
the politics of other countries, to bolster their
economies, or even to defend them against their
enemies if we are not directly threatened. As
George Washington forewarned, the appropriate
“…conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations,
is in extending our commercial relations and to
have with them as little political connection
as possible.”
We must return to the Founder’s policy of
military and political nonintervention — while
allowing free trade, technological cooperation,
and cultural exchanges.
A noninterventionist foreign policy protects U.S.
sovereignty, preserves the liberty of its people,
and promotes fair and friendly international
relations. Such a foreign policy will not go abroad
seeking monsters to slay, but will deter through
strength and promote liberty across the globe by
serving as an example to the rest of the world.
