Hubs

Layer 1 Device Does not examine Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) or above information. Floods frames out all ports except for the port the frame came in. Regenerates the signal, similar to a Repeater.

Switches

Layer 2 Device Examines Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) information to learn and to forward. Every frame that enters the switch, the switch: 1. Learns o Examines the Ethernet Source MAC Address of the frame. o If this address is in the MAC address table, with the same port number than the frame entered the switch, then it resets the aging timer for that table entry. o If this address is not in the MAC Address Table, the switch enters the Source MAC Address and the port it entered the switch into the MAC Address Table. The aging timer is started for this entry. o If this address is in the MAC address table but with a different port number than the frame entered the switch, the previous entry is deleted and a new entry with this Source MAC Address and port number is entered into the table. The aging timer is started for this entry. 2. Forwards o Examines the Destination MAC Address of the frame. o If this address is in the MAC Address Table it filters the frame, by forwarding the frame out only that port. Note: If the MAC Address Table shows an entry with the same port number that the frame entered the switch, then the switch does not forward the frame to prevent duplicate frames on the network. o If this address is not in the MAC Address Table it floods the frame, by forwarding the frame out all ports, except for the port it entered the switch. Switches regenerates the signal, similar to hubs and repeaters.
