Problem:

The story is told and set in the deep south, Maycomb Alabama. In the 1930s, the racial inequality was much more dramatic in the south than the north. In modern schools where this classic novel is being read, the racism may seem exrtreme and give an idea that the majority of white Americans were ruthlessly racist in this time period.

Solution:
As this was most likely an accurate depiction of the southern U.S. , to make this story more explicit of the reality in 1930s America, the addition of a court case in the north may have balanced out the absurd yet realistic prejudice in the south.

In general, TKAM is very historically prominent because it exposes the extreme racism in the south during this time period. In daily life, African Americans were always seen as inferior and Harper Lee's novel showed the unessecary discrimination and protested for change.

Why To Kill A Mockingbird is an imporant historical text

TKAM shows the realisitc inequality in the courtroom during the 1930s. Specifically, the jury was the group in the case that represented the prejudice in historical society. Like in the Scottsboro trial, Tom Robinson was only convicted for rape because of his race as with the nine African American boys in the Scottsboro case.
