We use it when we report what someone said.

Useful Expressions
We usually change tenses, pronouns and references to time and place when we report statements.

Important to know
After the verbs explain (explicar), say (decir) y suggest (sugerir), it is not necessary to mention who are you speaking to, but if you do, you must use the preposition to after the verb. For example:

She said she would do the shopping


The tour guide explained to the tourists that they needed a visa.

I said to my wife that I was surprised at the result.


He suggested to Monica that the driver should be paid.

Important to know
When we use tell we normally say who is speaking to, so we have to use it with a direct personal object. For example: Monica told HIM she would be late

We use Tell and a pronoun with to, to report commands and imperatives.

For example:
Doctor: Eat more fish! Dont eat red meat! The doctor told me to eat more fish The doctor told me NOT to eat red meat

Reported Questions
There are two types of questions: a) Reported Wh-questions b) Reported yes / no questions

There are two ways to use the Whquestions


a) Peter asked Mary, Who did you meet at the party last night? b) Peter asked Mary who she had met at the party the previous night.

Something that you should know


~ the introductory verb is asked, not said; ~ the question word who is kept; ~ the word order becomes subject + verb ~ the substance ends with a full stop(.); not a question mark(?) and ~ the verb tense, pronoun and time expression are changed in the same way as in reported statements.
