DEFINITION:
Equation:_________________________________________________________________________
Properties of Equality
PROPERTY SYMBOLS EXAMPLES
Reflexive For any real # a, a = a
Symmetric If a = b, then b = a
Transitive If a=b, and b = c, then a = c
Substitution If a=b, then a may be replaced
By b and b may be replaced by a.
Addition If a=b, then a + c = b + c
Subtraction If a=b, then a – c = b – c
Multiplication If a=b, then ac = bc.
Division If a=b & c ≠ 0, then a/c = b/c
EX2. Name the property illustrated by each statement.
a. If 3m = 5n and 5n = 10p, then 3m = 10p
Property__________________________
b. If –11a + 2 = 3a, then –3a = 11a + 2 Property__________________________
c. If xy = 28 and x=7, then 7y = 28 Property__________________________
d. a – 2 = a – 2 Property__________________________
a.) a + 4 = 76 Answer__________________________
b.) –3/5 d = 18 Answer___________________________
c.) x – 5.48 = 0.02 Answer__________________________
d.) 18 = 1/2 x Answer_________________________
EX5. MULTISTEP EQUATIONS
2(2x + 3) – 3(4x –5) = 22 ST5: 53 = 3(x –2) –2(3x –1)
