How can I stand here? Without falling down?

H e r e

Why dont I fall down?

A. Im actually standing on top of the Earth in real life, not on the side of it. B. Down is actually towards the Earths core, keeping me firmly on the surface.

on Earth, this means towards the core!

What about things that float?

There must be a force that counters gravity!

a force in gases and liquids that pushes against gravity. If you weigh less than a surrounding gas or liquid, it will push you up as gravity pulls the gas or liquid under you!

on Earth, this means away from the core!

Why does the balloon float?

A. The surrounding air in the atmosphere is heavier than the balloon, so it sinks below the balloon. The balloon, in turn, is pushed up by the air under it. B. The air in the balloon is lighter than the gravity of the Earth can hold, so it floats away from the Earth.

Gravity and Buoyancy work together to make things FLOAT & SINK
