AS Unit F632 Foundation Portfolio in Film (Evaluation) Creative Artefact Evaluation For Unit F632, I had to produce a short

t film sequence for creative artefact, which related to my textual analysis. The focus of my creative artefact was the representation of teenage protagonists in film more specifically focusing on the development of the two teenage protagonists. The principle of my sequence is that a young teenage boys girlfriend is killed and the main point of the story is find out who killed her. Using the ideas I have obtained from the two teenage protagonists in my textual analysis, I was able to create my protagonist using both Trevor and Brendans traits. For the narrative of my creative artefact, I used the plot of Brick, but used the dialect (slang) of Kidulthood. As both of the films I studied were within the drama/social realist genre, I had discerned from both films that the cinematography used consisted mainly on the use of close ups and extreme close ups. They both predominantly used a number of different angles and movements to make the film more aesthetically pleasing by building and amplifying tension between characters and using close ups to display the protagonists emotions. For example in Kidulthood, during the school scene, when Trevor (Aml Ameen) is getting bullied by Sam (Noel Clarke), a low angle is used to show how superior Sam is to Trevor and the close ups are used to show Trevors facial expression so the audience know how afraid he is. This is used to show that teenage protagonists are usually weaker and have to grow and develop to become more powerful. The successions of cuts are quite slow to emphasize on the tension of the scene and this is further enhanced by the diegetic and non-diegetic sound which help form continuity throughout the scene. The shots that I included within my creative artefact were edited to make the scenes feel longer, I did this to heighten the emotional effect and give the audience the feeling of tension. The close ups and extreme close ups that I used helped me show the protagonists facial expressions thus giving the audience an idea of how he felt. These helped me to not only help the audience feel the emotions the protagonist feels, but also to get a better understanding of his character. In addition to the cinematography and mise-en-scene, sound was also an important factor in insuring that my creative artefact was successful. I used a simple sad instrumental to accompany the protagonists heartbreaking emotions which would allow the audience to sympathise with the main character. Editing was also a main aspect of my films success as the juxtaposition of shots had to be neat and fluent. I had to use the correct lighting and effects to ensure the audience knew the message I was trying to convey.

When planning my creative artefact, I had to find actors for the role of the protagonists in my film. I had gathered 3 teenage males who I thought would be suited for the role and screen tested them. For their screen test, they had to perform a monologue and portray a number of different emotions. When putting the screen tests together as pre-production planning for my portfolio, I had created detailed notes on the performances of the actors. I had chosen my actor based on the actors stage presence, performance skill and appearance. I needed an actor that could be emotional yet have a powerful presence and I had the person that best suited the role. In addition to my screen tests, I also surveyed a number of different locations which consisted of a hospital and an Estate. I took photos of a hospital, corner shop and estate but ended up only using the hospital and the estate. I believe my finished artefact was quite successful in a sense that I managed to present how teenage protagonists are represented within the drama/social realist genre. The filming for my creative artefact took no more than a day as the locations were only a walking distance away from each other. I spent an hour filming outside a hospital in which the protagonist Michael (Jonas Mondua) leaves the hospital after visiting his girlfriend who has been fatally wounded. He decides that he wants to avenger and attempts contact his friend Jonas, as the phone rings, Michael has a flash back of a conversation he has with his girlfriend Michelle. I then spent the rest of the day filming the flashback scene, which took considerably more time than the previous scene. I filmed most of this scene using mid shots and close ups to enhance the audiences perception of the characters emotions. During my editing sessions, I changed the brightness and also added a different effect to make it clear to the audience that it was a flashback. I used depth of field to allow the audience to focus on the two characters within the scene and then added some sad music in the background to enhance the emotion in the scene. I believe my creative artefact emulates the strong emotions from Kidulthood and Brick very well. Overall, I am pleased with the outcome of my film, creating this film has given me knowledge of the production stage of a film and also allowed me to become more creative.
