Bibliography Title: Gastroenteritis outbreaks in elderly homes in the east of France during winter 2009/10: aetiology research for a series of 37 outbreaks

Introduction: In elderly population, the most frequent causes of infectious disease is Gastroenteritis. By having an impaired immune system, chronic diseases is a risk factor of acquiring the disease especially by old people. Gastroenteritis was defined as the sudden onset of at least two episodes of vomiting or two episodes of diarrhea during a 24 hour period. An outbreak surveillance protocol about gastroenteritis was designed to increase the nursing homes awareness of the new surveillance programme. Summary: A descriptive research was performed using EpiData analysis. 37 outbreaks of gastroenteritis were reported and identified. Four types of symptoms were reported;diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and fever. The managements that were implemented was done rapidly with an average of 1.6 days after the start of the outbreak. There was a limitation of this study such as, symptoms were not collected at the individual level but at the outbreak level. Conclusion: In collaboration with the health authorities and respected instructions, the nursing homes were aware of the surveillance protocol. The outbreaks were rapidly controlled and collected a sizeable and value sets of data. Nursing Implications: a. Nursing Practice Nurses, must be aware of the risk of the patient to have dehydration because of the signs and symptoms that manifested by gastroenteritis and to provide the necessary action or management. b. Nursing Education Since it was commonly discuss in the class, nursing students will be able to manage correctly and efficiently the patient.

For further improvement, since they were not able to determined the frequency and duration, for further research, they must improve it. d. Nursing Administration Increase the knowledge and clinical exposure for the nursing students in their institution so that they can encounter some different kinds of diseases. So that they are aware and able to manage the patient correctly.
