GLOBAL ARCHITECTURE

The Global Architecture family of publications, also known as GA, has had a major impact on the documentation of modern architecture. World famous photographer, Yukio Futagawa, began editing the original GA series in 1970. In addition to his outstanding photos, each paperback issue thoroughly documents one or two masterpieces of modern architecture. Critiques by prominent architectural historians are included. Almost all issues have text in English as well as Japanese. The first 60 numbers in the series were reorganized and issued in 13 hardbound volumes, called Global Architecture Book, in 1981. Each of the first 12 volumes contains five issues of the original GA classified by the kind of buildings they represent (houses, office buildings, museums, etc.). Volume 13 reprints the five issues of GA Detail which provide detail drawings of projects (see below). The contents of each volume are given below. The Architecture Library has a few of the individual numbers of the original paperback issues. Check OSCAR for call numbers and locations. After a brief lapse the GA series began publication again with #61 and continues to be publis Following the contents of the GA Book set (below) you will find a list of the titles received in this series after #60 to the present date. All are available on closed reserve under the call number: NA680 G579. Because of the wide popularity of the GA format, Futagawa and the publishers, A.D.A. Edita, decided to expand the series. In 1976, they introduced GA Houses. It documents outstanding new residential architecture worldwide. Most issues include residential works from the past which are considered influential in the evolution of current design. All the issues are kept on permanent reserve under the call number: NA7100 G13. They have also published GA Houses Special: California Architecture: Morphosis/Eric Owen Moss (NA7235.C2 C33 1985 Closed Reserve) and, more recently, the two volume GA Houses Special: Masterpieces, 1945-1970 and 1971-2000 (NA7110 .F87 2001 Closed Reserve) The next series to appear was GA Document which began in 1980. Its purpose is to document the latest commercial, institutional and government projects internationally. All of the numbers in this series are also on reserve under the call number: NA680 G229.

A series of monographs was the next venture. GA Architect began in 1982. Each issue is dedicated to the work of an outstanding international practitioner. The same high quality of photography and documentation is evident in this publication. Also included are essays by architectural critics and the architect's own account of his works. Thirteen titles have been published so far and most are on permanent reserve. Check the list which appears at the end of this handout for the architects included and the corresponding call numbers of the volumes. GA Japan began in 1992 and, unlike the others mentioned, it is mostly in Japanese with some English captions. It focuses on recent architectural design in Japan and also includes articles on theoretical and technical topics. The call number for it is: NA1555 G35 and the most recent issues are on closed reserve.

The newest title to be added to the GA group is GA Document Extra. This series was introduced in 1995 and now includes 10 numbers. There is dual English and Japanese text. Each one treats a single architect illustrating his or her latest works through photographs, drawings and interviews. Also included are sections about the architect's projects currently in progress. All issues are on permanent reserve under the call number: NA680 G2295.
