BASAL METABOLISM

Basal Metabolism

Basal metabolism is the measure of energy needed by the body at rest for all its internal chemical activities; approximately 1 calorie per kilogram of body weight per hour for an adult. It is the minimum energy of energy needed by the body at rest in the fasting state.

Conditions for BMR test

1. the subject must be in fasting or postabsorptive state, at least 12 hours after meals. 2. the subject must be awake, lying quietly, free from physical fatigue, nervousness or tension. The environment temperature should be between 20-25C so that the body can maintain body temperature. Values obtained in this test which are within the plus or minus 10% are still considera

Simple method for the calculation of the BMR it to use the rule of thumb 1 kcl per kg per hour for adult female and .09 Kcal per hour female. Energy needed of 1200 Kcal per day . Ex. Male 75 kg. = 1 kcal x 75 x 24 =1800 kcal Female 65 Kg =.9 kcal x 65x 24 = 1404 Kcal

Harris-Benedict formula

This was developed in 1990, using information on weigh, height, age For male: REE=66+[13.7 x wt (kg)]+[5xht(cm)-[6.8 For females REE=655=[9.6 x wt(kg)+ {kg}+118

Another method used in obtaining the metabolic or fat-free body size id called the biologic body weight raised to the power. Once the metabolic body size is known based on weight in kilograms
