Welcome to Year 9!
In Year 9, we study the novel To Kill a Mockingbird; the play Romeo and Juliet and a selection of Australian literature including short stories and poems. We explore the theme of family, drawing on the film Bend it Like Beckham, and we also study language and writing: spelling, grammar and punctuation, various writing styles and skills such as essay writing, drafting, planning and editing.
A rough outline is: TERM 1: Australian literature, creative writing, oral presentations, class spelling bee TERM 2: Text study of To Kill a Mockingbird, essay writing TERM 3: Text study of Romeo and Juliet, essay writing, creative writing TERM 4: Context study of Bend it Like Beckham, creative writing, oral presentations
In both semesters, you will also be expected to read widely in addition to your course reading. This wider reading will form part of your assessment for your end of semester reports.
