1. Water flows in a 50 mm pipe, 100 m long, whose roughness k is equal to 0.013 mm. If the pressure drop across this length of pipe is not to exceed 50 kN/m2, what is the maximum allowable water velocity? The density and viscosity of water may be taken as 1000 kg/m3 and 1.0 mN s/m2 respectively. Answer:

2. Estimate the steady mean velocity for a commercial steel pipe with the following characteristics: length L = 30.48 m inside diameter Di = 0.0526 m wall roughness k = 0.000045 m frictional pressure drop P = 15720 N/m2 liquid viscosity = 0.01 N s/m2. liquid density = 1200 kg/m Answer:

3. The viscosity of an oil is to be measured using the falling sphere method. The oil, of relative density 0.88, is contained in a vertical tube of diameter D = 19 mm. A sphere of relative density 1.151 and diameter d = 4.75 mm is dropped into the oil along the axis of the tube and reaches a terminal velocity of 6 mm s1. For d/D = 0.25, the viscous drag force acting on the sphere may be taken as 1.80 times the value in a fluid of infinite extent (theoretical value). Determine: (a) the dynamic and kinematic viscosities of the oil (b) the Reynolds number of the sphere. Answer:

4. The figure below shows a siphon discharging oil (specific gravity = 0.84) from a reservoir into open air. If the velocity of flow in the pipe is v, the friction losses from points 1 to 2 is 2.0 v2/(2g), from points 2 to 3 is 3.0 v2/(2g), determine the volume rate in the siphon pipe and absolute pressure at point 2. Assume atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psia.
