Contamination of Pathogenic bacteria in Bivalve Mollusks in Ban Don Bay,
Suratthani Manee Gannarong, Somnuk Promsorn and Sakuntip Pudkaew Suratthani Fish Inspection and Research Center ABSTRACT A study on contamination of pathogenic bacteria: Vibrio parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus, V. cholerae Salmonella spp., indicators bacterial : coliforms, fecal coliforms and Escherichia coli contaminations in bivalve mollusks harvested from Ban Don Bay, Suratthani was carried out for 12 months from February 2007 through January 2008. During the study, the bacteria contaminated was isolated from the samples of oyster (Crassostrea belcheri), clam (Anadara granosa, Linn.) mussel (Perna viridis, Linn.) and sea water that were monthly collected from 3 stations in Bandon Bay and each station had 3 replications. The result showed that total bacteria in oyster, clam, mussel and seawater at 1.0 x 105, 7.7 x 103, 6.2 x 104 CFU/g and 6.0 x 102 CFU/mL respectively, which are in the values of staadard criteria of bacterial contamination for fresh body consumption regulated by the Department of Medical Science (DMS). The average amount of V.parahaemolyticus contaminated in oyster, clam and mussel were found about 5.5 x 102, 7.4 x 102, 7.0 x 102 CFU/g respectively, which are lower than the values of those regulated in the DMS standard criteria of bacterial contamination for fresh body consumption. The average amount of E.coli in oyster, clam and mussel were found in high contamination during May June, which are lower than the values of those presented in the standard criteria for the bivalve aquaculture area of the Department of Fisheries. The average amount of E.coli in oyster, clam, mussel and seawater were 87.83, 10.39, 60.04 MPN/100 g and 7.06 MPN/100 mL respectively, while the contamination of V. cholerae, V.vulnificus and Salmonella spp. Were 8.15, 2.4 and 6.47% of the total amount of sample respectively. The results from this study show a necessity of having prevention measure for safety consumption of bivalves mollusks. The center for water quality monitoring in the culture area, the bivalve depuration program after harvest or cooking before consumption of the bivalves harvested during raining season are the examples of safety program suggested for the consumption bivalves mollusks cultured in Ban Don Bay, Surathani Key words: Pathogenic bacteria, oyster (Crassostrea belcheri), clam (Anadara granosa, Linn.), mussel (Perna viridis, Linn.), Bandon Bay, contamination _______
