    Optimization methods were developed throughout history, starting with contributions from Newton, Leibnitz, Bernoulli, Euler, and Lagrange to the foundations of calculus and functional minimization. Lagrange further developed the use of multipliers for constrained problems. Optimization became widely used in the 20th century when fast computers enabled implementation and further research in numerical methods, including work in the UK on unconstrained optimization and by Kuhn and Tucker on nonlinear programming conditions. Engineering applications of optimization include minimum aircraft weight design, optimal space vehicle trajectories, minimum cost civil engineering design, optimum mechanical component design, efficient machining condition selection, and maximum efficiency design.
