Geography Option

What topics will I study?


a) Physical geography topics will include the earths formation, volcanoes and earthquakes, the work of rivers and the current issues affecting Britains coastal areas. b) Human geography topics will include: population change around the world, changes in the urban environment, tourism and development issues.

What kind of class activities will there be?


Lessons will vary according to the topics taught, but a range of activities could be used (eg research/project studies and the use of computers for word processing, spread sheets and research). Fieldwork a residential trip to the Isle of Wight (subject to change).

What kind of homework assignments will there be?


Homeworks are regular, once a week and will be directly related to your studies. Tasks will vary from research from books, newspapers and the internet as well as work sheets and project studies. Students should also purchase the AQA A revision guide from school.

What percentage of the final GCSE grade is for a controlled assessment?


25% of your final mark is made up by your fieldwork investigation

What is you final examination made up of?


It will be made up of two papers: > Paper 1: Physical geography (37.5%) > Paper 2: Human geography (37.5%) > Your submitted controlled assessment (25%) What are the most interesting parts of the GCSE course? Whatever your likes or dislikes, the whole course gives you a better understanding of the world we live in, the problems we face and the solutions suggested to help. This could be the natural world of volcanoes and earthquakes or human issues. For example, the reasons behind the growth of cities and human behaviour. Fieldwork involves you working outside, collecting your own information and being treated in a responsible manner.

Why would geography be a useful course for me to take?


> It is contemporary (up-to-date) geography is always happening, around you right now. > It is one of the most well respected subjects, which will give you credibility whatever job or career you decide to follow. > It may be a subject that you particularly need for your chosen career. > It is a subject which supports and mixes easily with science, language and arts based courses.
