CHILD TEMPERAMENT- A RISK FACTOR FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD CARIES

INTRODUCTION The relationship of child behavior with various other childhood illnesses has been widely described. Child-parent interactions, sibling relationships, behavior, and emotional reactions have all been described in association with various conditions. Many studies have been conducted to demonstrate the biological and social risk factors of Early Childhood Caries (ECC). But recently, interest has grown in looking beyond traditional biological etiological factors associated with dental caries. Relatively little is known about the relationship between ECC and aspects of behavior and social development in young children. This studys purpose was to characterize the temperament of preschool children and associate it with ECC. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To characterize the Temperament in preschool children suffering from ECC. MATERIALS AND METHOD A sample of 100 children in the age group of 4-6 years suffering from ECC will be selected. Their dmft score will be recorded. Prior informed consent will be taken from their parents/ guardians. The parents will be interviewed with a Questionnaire to determine the Childs Temperament. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY The study would help us determine the behavior pattern of children more prone to ECC.
