2 Factors Affecting Population Growth


Problem:

What affects the growth of populations?


What you need:

four 25-ml empty cans

soil

40 mung beans seeds (munggo) water What to do: 1. Label the cans 1 to 4. Fill cans 1 and 2 with dry potting soil. Fill cans 3 and 4 with moistened potting soil. 2. Plant 10 munggo seeds in each can and cover the seeds with 0.5 cm of soil. 3. Place cans 1 and 2 in a well-lighted area. Place cans 3 and 4 in a dark place. Label the cans to show if they are wet or dry and in the light or in the dark. 4. Observe the cans each day for four days. Keep the soil moist in cans 3 and 4. Record your observations. 5. Observe the plants for two weeks after they sprout. Continue to keep the soil moist in cans 3 and 4 record your observations.

What have you found out: 1. How many seeds sprouted in each can?

2. After two weeks, how many plants in each can were still living?

3. What factors are needed for the seeds to sprout?

4. What is needed for mongo plants to grow?

5. Infer why did some seeds sprout then die?
