Phones are used at the very start to show the audience that the male and female are on the phone to each other, however, they are on the phone to completely different people and we see this after the phone conversation is over. This prop is symbolic because it is the first prop used and shared between the characters, and also it brings them together for their first physical contact as their hands touch and this sparks the love between them. Roses are symbolic in this scene because it connotes love but when she throws them on the floor and stomps on it, it connotes she is stomping on his love and their love is now over.
