Farmington Woods IB/PYP Magnet Elementary Family Marathon

Join us for the 2014 Farmington Woods Family Marathon. This marathon is structured to allow our students, to run/walk a full 26.2 mile marathon at a rate that is fun and safe for their growing bodies. The final 1.2 miles will be run from the track behind the school. This is a FAMILY affair! Yes, that means parents, siblings; grandparents and friends are encouraged to join in. Our goal is to support family efforts to make regular exercise a part of their healthy lifestyles. What is a Marathon? A foot race over a course measuring 26 mi. 385 yards (42 km 195 meters), any long-distance race or any contest, event, or the like, of great, or greater than normal, length or duration or requiring exceptional endurance: a dance marathon; a sales marathon. The origin of the marathon is attributed to Pheidippides' 26-mi. (42-km) run from Marathon to Athens to carry news of the Greek victory over the Persians in 490 B.C. SAVE THE DATES (1) Friday February 7, 2014 (Extended until Wednesday February 26, 2014) Registration Information Due Date Complete the registration form and turn in to the blue PTA mailbox with $6 (payable to FWES PTA) if you want your child to receive a medal and t-shirt for participating. The $6 is not required for participation. (2) Monday April 14, 2014 Running Logs Due Date Use the attached Running Log to keep track of the miles students run or walk leading up to 26.2. Students must return their running logs to their classroom teacher in order to participate in the final 1.2 school wide celebration run. The final celebration is to honor students who have kept their commitment to train and have met their goal. If your child has not completed their training by the date required, they may complete it on their own and come to Mr. Eller anytime before the end of the school year. Please do not encourage your child to participate in the final school run if they have not met their training requirement. (3) Thursday April 17, 2014 Date of the final 1.2 mile run at school: Students have from February 25 through April 14 to add up their mileage to 25 miles. What happens next? Once you register, the fun begins. Students will walk or run a few days each week. Mark the spaces on the running log (see attachment) to help them focus on their goal and to learn how far they have run. Parents, please check progress along the way and sign for each mile your child completes. When students run or walk all 25 miles, they may turn in their running log to their classroom teacher. Runners and walkers will complete their last 1.2 miles of the marathon distance at school as their classmates and families cheer them on. Our goal is to complete a marathon. We will train and record our mileage up to twenty-five and return our running log to school on or before April 14. We have included our $6 for the Family Marathon Fund (checks payable the FW PTA). The Family Marathon Fund will provide participating students with a certificate of achievement, a medal and a t-shirt. Students may still participate but opt out of receiving the medal and t-shirt.
