The Legacy of Vivekananda

The idea of India as a distinct civilization and cultural habitat found its most creative expression in Swami Vivekananda .It was his persistent belief that India was capable of giving back to the world as much as it took from the world and thereby establish its rightful claim in the assembly of nations. This nation has distinctive ideas and ways of celebrating its heroes. We were ever so prompt and passionate in commemorating the births and deaths of notable individuals as though these events in themselves mattered more than the ideas or institutions they left behind. Swami Vivekananda represents the high noon of a Hindu revival, both in popular perception and serious historical literature. Anniversaries of the key events of Swami Vivekananda life periodically confront his devotees and admirers, India, the land of his birth, and scholars and commentators with the question of how best to mark his career and legacy.. It was his persistent belief that India was capable of giving back to the world as much as it took the world and thereby reestablish its rightful claim in the assembly of nations. Swami Vivekananda entertained vast knowledge in Hinduism as well as Christianism. He always used to keep Bhagavad Gita and The Bible with him whenever he used to go for any tour. He was a voracious reader and an evident orator. Being a spiritual person, he was very much interested in knowing the theories and philosophies of other religions. On his 150th birth anniversary, this paper is solely aimed to showcase a critical reappraisal of his life and legacy.
