This study analyzes the development of the character Silas Marner in George Eliot's novel Silas Marner. It uses library research and psychological theories to examine how Silas changes from a religious man to a hopeless introvert after being betrayed, and then changes again to an extrovert family man after adopting Eppie. The discussion shows that Silas's personality is influenced both by his own will and the social environments of Lantern Yard and Raveloe, as well as the influence of his adopted daughter Eppie.

This study discusses the developmental process of Silas Marners
character in George Eliots novel Silas Marner. The development are caused by the influence of his surrounding. The method used in this study is library research method which is used to obtain the needed information suitable with the topic to be discussed. The problem formulation of the thesis is main characters characterization in novel Silas Marner, psychological analysis id, ego, superego, the personality change of Silas Marner in the Lantern Yard and Raveloe, also the Eppies influence on Silas Marners personality. Structural approach method is used to analyze the character and setting where as psychological approach method is used to describe the character developmental process. The theory used in writing this thesis is Sigmund Freud of psychological analysis id, ego, superego,as well as Brouwer and Horton et al about personality development. The discussion in this study discloses Silas Marners personality development from good and religious man in his hometown, Lantern Yard into an introvert hopeless and unfaithful man because of a betrayal. Later, Silass character changes again to extrovert, good and religious man after he meets Eppie. His strong will give his child the best thing is also a prominent element for him to change himself, In conclusion, a Silas Marners personality development is derived from his own will as well as social environmental influence and his child also give an influence to the Silas Marners personality change
