What is this Castle?
• This castle is
Rochester Castle, of
Rochester, Kent
which is located in
south eastern
England.
• It was first built in 43
AD by the Romans
under Aulus
Plautius.
Rebuilding
• Rochester Castle was rebuilt in 1127 after it
was given to the Archbishop of Canterbury,
William de Corbell.
• This is when the huge keep and Norman
castle were built.
• A keep is a strong central tower of a castle
which is used by as a dungeon and is the
most protected part of the castle.
The Siege of 1215
• After spending 115 lb. on castle repairs, King
John of England was refused rule over the
castle by Archbishop Langston.
• After multiple attacks on the castle, King john
failed to penetrate the walls and the 100
knights had kept the castle safe.
• The keep was unharmed by all of the attacks.
The Siege of 1264
• The castle was
attacked again but
by Simon de
Montfort.
• They too were
unsuccessful after
only a week of trying
to get inside the
castle.
Materials Used
• Rochester Castle
was one of the first
castles in Europe to
be rebuilt in stone.
• The keep was built
of Kentish Rag
stone.
