PLL Theory

Structure
PLL is a circuit that locks the phase of the output to the input. The PLL consists of : 1)Phase detector . 2)Loop filter . 3)Voltage controlled oscillator .

Basic idea

Function of the phase detector

Phase detector is a comparator that compares the input frequency fs with output frequency of VCO and generates a d.c voltage that is proportional to the phase difference between the two frequencies. i.e. the Phase Detector (PD), detects between the output and the input . Phase Detector is an XOR gate .

Function of the Low pass filter

The function of the low pass filter is to remove high frequency components (fo+fs) from the output of the phase detector.

Function of the VCO

The VCO is an oscillator circuit in which the frequency of oscillation can be controlled by an externally applied voltage. The output frequency of VCO is directly proportional to the input applied voltage. The error input voltage shifts the VCO frequency in a direction to reduce the difference in frequency between fs and fo. The VCO continues to change frequency till its output frequency fo exactly the same as the input signal frequency fs. The circuit is then said to be locked.
