PSYCHOSOCIOLOGICAL MEANING OF THE BORDER

Summary
Borders are set between people for the purpose of emphasising their differences and establishing self identity in contrast to others identities. A border between
them and us determines not only our direct contact with others, but also the way in
which we perceive and evaluate them. A border can be a source of both cooperation
and conflict. The aim of this text is to re-evaluate different social and psychological
meanings that borders hold for different peoples, social groups and individuals. We
will try to make a connection between social and psychological factors which cause
and configure the establishment of borders, and connect them to those which in various social contexts help with their overcoming. Another aspect that we would like to
discuss is concerned with the types and functions of borders as parts of lives and perceptive notions of individuals and social groups. Some borders prevail because they
maintain the images of self and others, others lose their importance, and at the same
time new borders are set daily. Living on the border is a phrase which can describe
various situations in social life. It is a sui generis quality, which implies the establishment of a specific border life subculture. The following will be taken as factors
which influence the establishment of a border: tradition, value systems, religion and
socialisation, while people and the family will be presented as groups which experience the consequences of this phenomenon.
Key Words:

border, religion, morality, family, social perception.
