Habitats
2nd Grade

Melissa Pope ELED 3550 Dr. Buckner

Contextual Factors: 11 boys 10 girls 15 students come from a low socioeconomic status 6 students who struggle with language arts; 2 have IEPs 5 students who struggle with speech; 4 have IEPs 5 students who struggle with mathematics; 2 have IEPs 2 special education students; same students that have the IEPs listed above

Big Idea: Students will recognize and describe the different kinds of habitats. Students will also know what the characteristics and basic needs are for the living things in each habitat.

Utah State Core: Standard 4: Life Science. Students will gain an understanding of Life Science through the study of changes in organisms over time and the nature of living things. Objective 1: Tell how external features affect an animals ability to survive in its environment. Objective 2: Identify basic needs of living things (plants and animals) and their abilities to meet their needs.

Unit Objectives: Students will know the different habitats and what part of the world they are each found. Assessment: Students will create a map of the world, coloring each habitat a different color. Students will know the characteristics of the living things in each habitat. Assessment: Students will be given a list of animals. Students will need to make a chart and place the animals into the correct habitat. Students will know the basic needs of living things in each habitat. Assessment: Students will write a paragraph about the basic needs of the animal of their choosing.

Assessment: Participation in discussion about text. Assessment: Map of world with habitats colored different colors Teacher observation Mathematics: Domain: Measurement and Data, Represent and interpret data: Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems1 using information presented in a bar graph. Assessment: Picture graph describing how much of the world is taken by each habitat Bar graph describing certain characteristics of the animals

Unit Rationale: Habitats can be a fun topic for students to learn about in many different areas of curriculum. This unit will give students the ability to learn about all kinds of different animals, where they live, and what they need to survive.
