City of Hampton
February 12,2008
The City of Hampton would like to invite you to a public information meeting on the proposed navigation
improvements to the Hampton River above the Booker T. Washington Bridge. The meeting will be held at the
following location and time:
• Update property owners along the river on the progress of the project
• Discuss private channel dredging
• Present updated construction cost estimates
The City has engaged Kimley-Horn and Associates, inc. (KHA), an independent engineering/consulting firm in
Chesapeake, to secure environmental permits and prepare plans and specifications for the dredging of the upper
reaches of the river and the placement of navigation markers in the river. Consultation with environmental
agencies and engineering studies have been undertaken to determine the optimal location, width and depth of the
channels. A preliminary layout has been prepared and project cost estimates have been revised.
The project will include dredging of a main navigation channel from the Booker T. Washington Bridge
northward to the headwaters of the river at Bromley Ave. and several additional channels connecting the main
channel to ancillary branches. At issue has been policy development for the dredging of private channels and the
upper reaches of secondary channels. The City has developed a policy for these areas and will present this
policy at the meeting. This policy will require those property owners who live along private canals and lakes to
sign a deed of easement.
Please also be aware that you can get updated information regarding this project by logging onto the City's web
page and clicking the button concerning the Hampton River Navigation Project. The City will periodically
update the information on this site.
Sincerely,
C Fleming, PE
