Definition

Welding is the process of joining metals by heating them to a suitable temperature with or without application of pressure and with or without filler metal.

Forge Welding
By heating two pieces of metal and then by hammering the heated ends together, the two pieces could be joined together in one continuous piece. The discovery now known is forge welding.

INTRODUCTION 01:3

Gas Welding
When acetylene is used with oxygen for gas welding is known as oxyacetylene welding.

INTRODUCTION 01:4

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

Use of coated metallic electrode to give a stable arc and at the same time protect the metal surface and molten weld deposit from atmospheric contamination. This method of welding is known as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW).

INTRODUCTION 01:5

Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)

SAW process involves formation of arc between continuously fed bare wire electrode and the work piece. The process uses a flux to generate protective gases, slag and to add alloying elements to the pool. The electric arc is covered by granulated flux hence the process is known as Submerged Arc Welding.

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG)

In the TIG process arc is formed between a pointed tungsten electrode and the work piece in an inert atmosphere of either argon of helium. The small intense arc provided by the pointed non-consumable electrode gives high quality welding joint. Filler metal if required is added separately. Since the arc is between a non-consumable Tungsten electrode and the base metal, protected by an inert gas the process is known as Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG).

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW),

sometimes also referred to as MIG welding, is a welding process in which metals are joined by heating them with an electric arc between the base metal and a continuous consumable electrode. A shielding gas or gas mixture is used to prevent the atmosphere from contaminating the weld.

Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)

The continuous electrode used is tubular with flux and alloying elements inside the wire, the process is known as Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
