It is microbial diseases of calcified tissues of teeth
characterized by demineralization of inorganic
portion and destruction of organic substance of

Etiology
Dietary factor:- Carbohydrates
Micro organism:- Streptococcus mutans actinomycosis
viscousus
Systemic factors:- Hereditary, pregnancy
Host factor:- Poor oral hygiene, improper brushing
technique

Hyperesthesia/Hypersensitivity
Causes:
Exposure of root surfaces due to gingival recession
Secondary to scaling, root planning or surgical
procedures
Induces by cold temperature, citrus fruits, sweets

Treatment
Plague control is necessary
Desensitizing agents are used Strontium chloride
(Sensodyne)

Aphthous ulcer
Painful, recurrent, superficial ulcers on movable oral
mucosa like tongue, buccal mucosa and soft palate
Clinical Features
Lesions are round, symmetric and shallow
Very painful hence eating becomes difficult for several
days
It ulcerates and gradually enlarges within next 48-72
hours

Treatment
Topical application of tetracycline followed by
cortisone ointment
Topical tetracycline mouthwash 250mg in 50 ml of
water is given 4 times a day for 5 to 7 days

Etiology

Haemolytic streptococcus is the commonest infecting
organism
Upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, pharyngitis,
ingestion of cold drink, pollution are predisposing
factors

Symptoms

Sore throat
Pain in throat during swallowing
Referred earache
Headache
Body ache
Malaise

Treatment
Bed rest
Analgesic:- Diclofenac 50 mg BD
Antibiotics:- Erythromycin 500 mg BD

Complications

Chronic tonsillitis
Peritonsillar abscess (quinsy)
Para pharyngeal abscess
Otitis media
