Kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line
Exercise A, Question 9

Question:
A particle moves in a straight line from a point A to a point B with constant deceleration 1.2 m s 2. The particle takes 6 s to move from A to B. The speed of the particle at B is 2 m s 1 and the direction of motion of the particle has not changed. Find a the speed of the particle at A, b the distance from A to B.

Solution:
a

a v 2 u

= 1.2 , t = 6 , v = 2 , u = ? = u + at = u 1.2 6 = u 7.2 = 2 + 7.2 = 9.2

The speed of the particle at A is 9.2 m s 1. b

u = 9.2 , v = 2 , t = 6 , s = ? s = ( = (
u+v 2 9.2 + 2 2

) t ) 6 = 5.6 6 = 33.6

The distance from A to B is 33.6 m.
