Kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line
Exercise A, Question 11

Question:
A particle moves in a straight line from a point A to a point B with a constant deceleration of 4 m s 2. At A the particle has speed 32 m s 1 and the particle comes to rest at B. Find a the time taken for the particle to travel from A to B, b the distance between A and B.

Solution:
a

a = 4 , u = 32 , v = 0 , t = ? v = u + at 0 = 32 4t t =
32 4

=8

The time taken for the particle to move from A to B is 8 s. b

u = 32 , v = 0 , t = 8 , s = ? s = ( = (
u+v 2 32 + 0 2

) t ) 8 = 16 8 = 128

The distance between A and B is 128 m.
