Kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line
Exercise A, Question 16

Question:
A particle is moving with constant acceleration in a straight line. It passes through three points, A, B and C with speeds 20 m s 1, 30 m s 1 and 45 m s 1 respectively. The time taken to move from A to B is t1 seconds and the time taken to move from B to C is t2 seconds.
t1 2 3

a Show that

t2

Given also that the total time taken for the particle to move from A to C is 50 s, b find the distance between A and B.

Solution:
a From A to B

= u + at 30 = 20 + at1
(1)

at1 = 10
From B to C

= u + at 45 = 30 + at2
(2)

at2 = 15

Dividing equation (1) by equation (2)

at1 at2 t1 t2 102 153 2 3

= =

, as required

b From the result in part a

t2

2 1 3

t1 + t2 = t + 1 t1 =
2 5

t = 2 1

2 1

t = 50 , given.

50 = 20
