A respiratory system’s function is to allow
gas exchange to all parts of the body.

Overall Function of the System

Flowchart of the System and
Organs involved
 The main parts of this system are the airways , the lungs , and
the linked blood vessels and the muscles that enable breathing.
 The airways are the pipes that carry oxygen-rich air to your lungs
and carbon dioxide , a waste gas , out of your lungs.
 The airways included your nose , mouth , larynx (LAR-ingks) ,
trachea , (TRA-ke-ah) , tubes called bronchi.

How the Respiratory System

works
Air enters and leaves the lungs via a
conduit of cartilaginous passageways- the
bronchi and bronchioles.
In this image , lung tissue has been
dissected away to reveal the bronchioles.

How the Respiratory System

works (cont.)
• These include diseases of the lung and nerves and muscles of
breathing . They are a common and important cause of illness
and death.
• Emphysema is a lung disease , characterized by an abnormal ,
permanent enlargement of air spaces distal to the terminal
bronchioles.

Respiratory System Diseases

 Asthma is a predisposition to chronic inflammation of the lungs in which
the airways (bronchi) are reversibly narrowed.
 An inhaler is used to prevent asthma.

 Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder known to be an inherited
disease of the secretory glands, including the glands that make
mucus and sweat.
 Although technically a rare disease, cystic fibrosis is ranked as
one of the most wide spread life-shortening genetic diseases.
