Using todays best technology a gas power plant overall efficiency of perhaps 38 to 41%.

The main reason for the lower efficiency resides in fact that the exhaust gas leaving the gas turbine is still extremely hot, i.e. exhaust still contains a significant amount of energy which has not been harnessed to generate electricity. There is a wide variety of applications in which this exhaust heat can be used to generate hot water or steam for use in some industrial process, or for heating purposes. This forms the basis of a gas turbine cogeneration system. There is second strategy which can be employed. The exhaust heat can be captured in a separate steam boiler normally called as heat recovery steam generator, where it generates steam which is used to drive a steam which is used to drive a steam turbine and generate additional electricity. This is the basis for the combined cycle power plant.

Block diagram of combined cycle power plant (ccpp). Advantages of . Applications of CCPP

Now a days plenty of gas is available ( we cant say future). Gas power plants produce relatively little pollution. Gas plant efficiency is high. area required for CCPP is less. Gas power plant is clean and neat. Gas power plant needs less working personnel. Total cost of the gas power is less. No fuel transportation(since air). no fuel cost. The operation and maintenance cost is low. Gas turbine as developed for air craft propulsion, is an extremely reliable and robust machine.

Applications of CCPP
The combined cycle power plants are used mostly where the gas reserves are available such as Europe countries, US etc . Some countries though the gas reserves are available they are not going for CCPP because, gas turbines is highly technical and complex machine which can be manufactured by a limited countries like India.
