THE IMPACT OF ART NOUVEAU

Wendy: Art Nouveau was a international, but short-lived movement. It was a departure and transitional phenomenon with deep roots in the nineteenth century that foreshadowed and paved the way for artistic development. It emphasized the ornamental, independent from content: shapes, color, line, and surface were signicant merely for decorative e!ect. But, Art Nouveau was not just a style. It was an intent. One that entailed a complete revaluation and replacement of stylistic heritage in order to create something NEW.

When I now say that a line is a force, I maintain something very real. It derives its form and energy from the person who has drawn it. This force and this energy affect the mechanism of the eye in such a way that they extend ones range of sight
Henry Van de Velde

Wendy: The most recognizable characteristic of the movement is the asymmetrical, undulating line. This line emphasized the structure of form and fused the object and its ornament into unity. But it was also symbolical of life through gesture, movement, character, expression and disposition. Henry Van de Velde, the theoretical founder of Art Nouveau, called it a force.

MOBILE APPLICATION

An interactive mobile application can help with the viewing experience. Hovering your phone over di!erent content in the exhibition can display additional information about the content or show a series of branding from old to new and how they reect on Art Nouveau. This will likely be some type of augmented reality experience.

Other museums use similar technology, but tailoring it directly to the content could really help add a more detailed viewing experience and engage the viewer.
