Analysing the opening sequence for The Fly David Cronenberg, 1986

A non-diagetic orchestral piece plays as the titles roll on a black background. The music is iconic to the Sci fi genre.

Chaotic camera movements with blurred green play and the camera tracks backwards to reveal the title of the movie. This gives the impression that the movie involves some type of chaotic and unexpected chain of events.

The main actors names appear over unknown moving shapes, this creates a sense of mystery in the unknown.

The colours start changing rapidly and the music speeds up, possibly foreshadowing a sharp and quick chain of events.

The blotches of colour then fade and turn into a normal image, this reveals that the moving colours were people moving in a room.

In summary
Overall there isnt much to go on in the opening of this movie, we are shown the titles and given some genre specific music but that is all we have to go on. There is an air of mystery which is given by the two unknown moving images of a chaotic background. Neither explain anything but they do tell us that there are large mystery elements and frantic moments in the movie. The music combined with these images gives us a tense atmosphere filled with mystery.
