Artist Ubik pushes street culture amid the towers of Dubai
Vivek Premachandran is a street artist who prefers to be known as
Ubik. He took the name from the title of a sci-fi novel because he liked its
associations with the word “ubiquitous”, meaning “everywhere at once”.
Painting on the streets, the traditional canvas of the street artist, just
isn’t an option in Dubai. Instead, Ubik’s graffiti-inspired work could be seen
recently at the city’s The Jam Jar gallery, where he held his first solo show
under the heading iamwhatiam. Ubik utilised the gallery as a studio, creat-
ing site-specific pieces in his trademark fusion of tribal and geometric pat-
terns. As he explained it, if he couldn’t go out and work in the street then he
would bring the street, in the form of curious passers-by, into the gallery.
He might not daub walls and flyovers, but Ubik is as much a product of his
local environment as celebrated urban guerrilla artist Banksy is of modern
Britain. Raised in Dubai and Kerala, Ubik dropped out of a fashion design
course to discover himself as an artist. Although Indian by ethnicity, he does
not consider himself an Indian artist. “I’m a Dubai artist,” he says. “This is
where I live and work. I’m influenced by artists from all over the world.”
A self-confessed workaholic (or “doodle-aholic”, as he says), Ubik is con-
stantly filling notepads with layers of intricate designs and detailing, some
of which will later be “remixed” (his term) with marker pens onto pieces of
reclaimed wood. “Spray paint is really expensive here and it’s not good qual-
ity, so I use markers instead,” he explains. “I use wood as my canvas because
it’s great to turn something you’ve found into something more.”
Next on the agenda, Ubik plans to resurrect a monthly arts fanzine, Cliché,
that he has intermittently published with his brother. Previous issues of the
publication took the form of a large sheet of paper folded down to some-
