A poem packs all kinds of ideas, feelings and sounds into a few carefully chosen words. Poetry is compact, imaginative and rhythmic. Poems use figurative language to get the point across. Poems are written to express emotion.

Strategies for Reading Poetry


1. Read the title first. 2. 1st time: Read slowly; look for topic; visualize 3. 2nd time: Practice close reading strategies 4. 3rd time: Read again to note figurative language. 5. 4th time: Read again for theme. 6. Go back to parts you dont understand 7. Relate the poem to your life.
