Using a social literary theory, discuss the childrens role in the extract. Provide evidence to support your answer. (7 marks) From the extract, the social critics would pay much attention to Mei Sims obeisance as a daughter towards her parent. Sim Mei seems not to enjoy her social life as she wishes. This is because her social was being fully control by her mother and as a child she must respect and obey her parent. It is clearly stated in the extract that a huge shame filled her and she was about to burst into noisy weeping when she saw her mothers red, red eyes.

(7 marks) Being a daughter in the family, the feminist critic shows that what a girl must do to live in a culture in which she has little power. She is also forced to maintain her dignity in the face of potential threat. She was scolded by her mother when the boy touched her. As stated in the extract, he clutched at the frills around the bib, starring at the pink and purple tuberoses painted on the thin organdy. Mei Si-i-m! her mothers voice brayed across the compound.
