The worlds most important equation

Its relatively easy to nd a passion that you can devote your life to. Its much harder to nd one that satises a deep need for others. When its just about you and your enjoyment, no outcome is expected. You dont have to worry about what other people think. Its your own personal art. But when other people are involved, you have to put their needs into consideration. What if they dont care about what you have to offer? Are they willing to pay for this? What if you cant deliver results? You also have to think about how to package whats in your head in a way where other people can get value. And after all that, you still have to nd the right people and build trust with them before theyll be receptive to spending money with you. Thats a lot to think about, and it can get pretty damn overwhelming. BUT... lets pause for a moment. None of this stuff really matters yet. The single most important thing you can do right now is to make sure that you have this equation gured out:

What I Love to Do + What Other People Really Need = Passion and Contribution
Before you do anything you with your business, you absolutely must have this part distilled with laser precision.

Why this equation is so important

Because if you dont love to do it, whats the point? Money? If thats the only

thing youre interested in there are plenty of other blogs out there for you. But Im guessing youre the type of person that would rather do something youre passionate about (and make a decent living), rather than be rich doing something you hate. But the money still matters, doesnt it? If youre doing something you love and no one cares, you just have a hobby, not a business. Thats ne if youre okay with compartmentalizing your passion. But, that just seems like a copout to me. Why not do what you love while making money? Why choose one or the other? You dont have to choose. You just have to carefully weigh your ideas potential before you start. And Im going to give you a process for doing that here. This guide will help you develop a business idea that you... Love Are condent in Can make the money you want with But before we get to that, I think its important to address some of the common fears with taking your gifts and offering them to others in exchange for money. The rst one is big: Someone else is already doing it better than me. Thats probably true. You might think, Why would people want what I have to offer when theres someone else out there providing a better solution? Not everyone wants an expert light years ahead of them. Many people are

incredibly satised working with someone a few steps of ahead of them that can easily relate to their situation since theyre not so far removed. Not everyone wants or can afford the $1,000 an hour life coach. There are a lot of people happy to pay $100 per hour for a coach. And remember: No one starts out the best in the world. Michael Jordan wasnt always the greatest basketball player on the planet. Did it stop him from striving for greatness? Of course not. Most markets people are spending money in are lled with qualied people. Dont let that stop you from entering. Theyre crowded for a reason, because there is a gold mine of opportunity. But its only those that are willing to persistent through the dirt and hard rock that ever reach it. So instead of asking, Should I do this? try asking, How can I acknowledge my own greatness? Theres another big, scary fear, and its one that keeps many people from ever starting on their path... What if I fail / it doesnt work / no one cares? I have news for you: You probably will fail. Sources vary, but its well regarded that Edison failed hundreds if not thousand of times before he successfully invented the light bulb. So you have a choice, you can see each failure as a reason to quit. Or you can see it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Your rst attempt to ride a bicycle was probably a failure. Your rst attempt at love making probably wasnt the most grand performance, either. But you had to go through those awkward early efforts before you got the hang of things. The same goes for your business. Seth Godin describes this perfectly in his book The Dip. With anything worth

doing there is a lter that separates those that lean into the challenge and accomplish something great, and those that quit right before theyre about to break through. But worse than that is not trying at all. So, right now you have a choice. Will you accept the risk of failing which is really just an opportunity to grow or will you play it safe and follow the predictable, well-traveled road? Try this: Instead of thinking about all the reasons you might fail or shouldnt do something, think about all of the ways you could succeed. List all of the resources you have and ways that you could approach your challenge intelligently. I guarantee that your perspective will shift immediately. Now that weve addressed some of the common fears (and turned them into advantages), were going to help you develop a plan to generate ideas that light you on re and serve others at the same time so you can get paid.

Before you choose your path

I want to be 100% up front with you in this guide. Finding your passion and helping others can be a messy business. Its not always going to be cut and dry and it will likely take some deep reection, journaling or meditation to nd what that purpose is and how you can be condent in it. The goal of this guide is to give you a solid framework for generating ideas and testing them to see if theyre viable or not. But only you can make the nal decision and there will always be some risk involved in that. There are certain things you just cant test or be sure of until you get your hands dirty and start walking the path. (For example, Netix tests relentlessly, but they never could have known for sure if renting movies by mail would work until they tried it.) While you can gain important insights, the path never becomes completely

clear by looking at a lot of maps and mentally speculating about the terrain. But it does become clear by setting out and personally exploring it. So with that spirit in mind, lets take the rst step.

Your passion spectrum

A lot of people think that they have to have One True Passion, and thats it. Its the coveted holy grail of all things blissful and purposeful. It has a mystique to it that makes it ominous and somehow it always eludes you. But in the real, unromanticized world there is a whole array of possibility in doing something youre passionate about. Here are a few examples: Doing slightly uninteresting work but working with really interesting people. Doing work where youre solving unique problems and being continually challenged. Work where youre leveraging your true strengths. Working toward a cause or goal that you feel is important. Obviously, the goal is to be only doing work that youre passionate about, working toward a cause you believe in with interesting people. But its important to realize that moving in that direction addressing one area at a time is also a worthwhile endeavor. You dont have to have all or nothing right now. Thats a lot of pressure and a lot of stress to put on yourself. So take a deep breath, relax and realize that any move in the direction of

more passionate work is awesome.

So, what do you love to do?

If you havent given yourself permission to be passionate, then now is the time do so. This is usually the biggest road block to nding your passionate work: without permission you dont even give yourself a chance to explore. You uproot ideas before theyve had a chance to grow. And thats no way to create a ourishing grove of ideas. So, step number one is to personally give yourself the permission to be passionate. As Alan Watts said, If you dont get it from yourself, where will you get it? Go ahead and do that, and come back when youre ready. Ill wait here. Ready to keep going? Alright. Step number two is to do some spirited reection. By spirited, I mean viewing this exploration and introspection as a serious pursuit. Really give yourself the time and space you need to do this. I recommend taking a week or more, removing everything from your schedule to really contemplate this. To get your brain spinning, start thinking about these questions: 1. What could I talk to someone for hours about with no sign of tiring? 2. Whats a long-time dream Ive had that Ive always wanted to really explore? 3. Whats something that Ive always wanted to be an expert in? 4. What am I intensely curious about? 5. What are some things that make me feel incredibly fullled?

6. What are two or three examples of great work Ive done in the past? (At the end of this guide, youll be able to use some worksheets to help guide you through these questions, so please make sure to take advantage of them.) After youve reected on and answered these questions, you want to start looking for patterns that arise. Whats common or shared within all or most of your answers? You might nd that your passion is something that youve yet to explore and validate, or it might be something youve already been doing for a long time, and you just havent accepted it because it was so obvious.

The practicality of passion

When it comes to discovering your passion, theres often a big, booming (and annoying) voice in the background asking... Is this really practical? This voice can either be your greatest friend or your greatest enemy. Ultimately, this voice is asking you, How are you going to do this? Theres not always an easy answer to the How question when were embarking into new territory. And predictably, this question discourages us because were not sure how to answer it. So we end up defaulting to the safe, predictable route where the answer is obvious. But, this isnt the only course we can take. Instead of being dissuaded, we can lean into the question. We can study the way other people have achieved success in the pursuit were undertaking and reverse engineer how they made it happen. Or we can simply say, Ill gure it out as I go along.

Ultimately, what the voice of practicality wants to save us from is the discomfort and pain of failure. Its intentions are good, as long as they help us be smarter about our strategy, and dont simply cause us to give up. So whenever you hear this voice come up, thank it for being there to support you. And either allow it to guide you in the direction of developing a strategy (or remembering the one you already have), or simply respond that you dont know yet and youll gure it out as you go along.

But... will other people really care?

If you were just doing this for the kicks, this question would be irrelevant. But since we want to make love and money, we need to really take this question seriously. We dont want to waste our time building a business where no one is interested in what we have to offer. If your passion is arctic sh puppeteering (okay, thats pretty ridiculous, but you get the point) you may have a hard time getting anyone else interested. So you have to rst gure out how you can take your passion and package it in a way where other people can draw value from it. There are a lot of ways to do this, and here are a few: Take what you know and teach other people how to do it (if youre a great golf player or guitarist, you could create a business giving others lessons). Take your skills and strengths and help people solve an urgent problem (if youre great at organization, you can help people create a better digital workow). Package your advice advice into a product with a specic outcome (business advice, relationship advice, etc.).

There are an endless number of ways you can deliver your knowledge to others. But the key here is extracting the value you have thats in your head and turning it into some type of product or service people can benet from.

What if Im not good enough to charge money for this?

This is another fear that rears its head when you set out to do something beyond what youve previously done. Remember, you dont have to be the best in the world. You just have to be a few steps ahead of someone else. If youre a green belt in Karate, you could probably help a white belt (the very beginner) move up to a yellow belt. Theyre not expecting you to help them become a blackbelt because thats too advanced for them. Dont wait until youre a blackbelt in your craft to think you can charge people for it. We have a tendency to undervalue our expertise (and not view ourselves as an expert at all) because its so normal to us. Were used to the talents and skills that we have, so we see them as average and typical. But to a beginner, its likely that they see your success and ability as something really valuable and worthwhile. Whenever youre questioning the value you have to give others remember that there is a person who sees where you are as something amazing and incredibly meaningful.

Will people really pay for this?

Once you have a good idea of what youre passionate about and are relatively condent that you can transfer that knowledge into value for another person, its time to ask the ultimate question: Are there people out there that

11 GET EVEN MORE gREAT gUIDES HERE: KICkASS GUIDES

want to buy this? You might be wondering why were covering this last. After all, shouldnt you gure out what people want to buy rst, and then see if youre passionate about it? I dont think so. If you start out with the money question theres a tendency to over think things and get discouraged before you even consider your passion. Youre also likely to lean toward things that can make you money that you dont really care about. And thats a bad idea. If youre an even slightly thoughtful person, youll nd it really difcult to make money at something you dont care about. Its much easier to make money doing something you love. But if were going to follow through with this, we still need to know if people are willing to take out their wallets and hand over the cash. And we can get a fairly accurate sense of that by answering a few questions. Can you identify an existing market with people actively seeking your solution? Does your offer satisfy a deep or urgent need? Does what you have to offer give people a sense of belonging and identity? (Not necessarily a sure sign that theyre willing to pay for it, but it denitely helps.) Are you helping someone achieve a dream or fuel a deep passion? Is there a clear, externally veriable outcome that people want (ie. 10,000 free frequent ier miles or double your productivity)? You dont have to have a yes answer to all of these questions, but the more you do, the better. Remember, your customer is expecting you to answer the
