Technology “Shrinks” the World
Did you know…

In 1993, 22.8% of all the U.S. households

had computers, and this number had
grown to 51% by 2000.

In 2003, approximately 50% of U.S.

households had internet access.
Effects of Technology
Technology refers to the ability of
humans to make things that help them and
give them some control over their
environment.
The Agricultural Revolution began 10,000
years ago. In just the past 100 years,
important transportation and
communication technologies have also
emerged.
Transportation technologies, such as
trains and steamboats, were important in
settling the United States.

Today jet planes greatly reduce travel

time, resulting in a shrinking world.
Communication technologies such as the
telephone, satellites, radio, television, and
the Internet allow instant worldwide
sharing of information.
Globalization

Civic participation refers to being an

involved citizen and caring about the
public affairs of your community, nation
and world.
People must be aware of both their rights
and their responsibilities

• Rights are benefits and protections

guaranteed to individuals by law.

• Responsibilities are duties owed to other

citizens and the government.
It is important to learn about the beliefs and
values of other people in the world so that you
can understand connections between them
and our country and be an informed member
of the global community.
Today the world’s countries depend on
one another for goods, raw materials, and
markets to sell goods, resulting in
interdependence among nations.
Globalization refers to
the development of a
world culture and
interdependence among
nations. Some people
fear this might lead to
the eradication of
traditions and customs
of smaller groups.
