Summary
This paper, in part, presents an introspective search for understanding: a. the origin of
existential crisis and b. a relation between the cultural industry, identity design and the
production of crises. The outcome of this research is an affirmation of personal rebellion,
a rebellion which does not require the victim, has no goal, no followers, no traitor ,...; a
rebellion that cherishes the world (and the Other) in its illogical consistency, a rebellion
which demolishes every antagonism by revealed quality of meaninglessness of existence.
Second perspective of the writing can be recognised in an attempt to point out that the
experience of recession is not reducible to an economic phenomenon; it is an expression
of the entire history of the West that has arrived to its end by reaching the epoch in which
the idea of freedom has been corrupted by the idea of capital.

Liberal capitalism, namely,

designates the end of the time of revolution as much as democratisation, as its modus
operandi, promotes an abolition of class difference, and thus neutralises requirement for
the class struggle that would lead to revolution. Over-accumulated frustration of identity
that sets difference as a de-formation remains to be relieved through revanchism, and cultural (post)industry develops itself as a global manufacture of specters: phantoms of crises
and threats... Personal crisis is treated pharmaceutically, collective crisis is adjusted by a
co-relation between terrorism and surveillance systems, social crisis is subsided by neo-

anarchism in a form of a post-metaphysical symbolic compilation of discharge of neo-left

and neo-right, and the global crisis is tuned by the threat of nuclear war or catastrophe.
At the end, the question remains: can we (learn to) live without all those frauds of history?

Summary
Within a broader scope of the topic (imperial discourse) the author of the paper excerpts
anti-imperial discourse or the discourse of freedom (liberation) as a discourse specific
to Serbian literature and cultural tradition since 18th century till the end of battles for
liberation and unification. At the same time, it was a battle for preserving the identity
imperiled both, by the pretensions that several imperial forces had toward the Balkans,
and cultural colonization. The discourse in question also includes critical distance toward Eurocentrism (J. S. Popovi), revitalization of imperial powers (P. P. Njego), the
battle against cultural colonization, as well as the one against adopting certain patterns
of other cultures, up to the prophetic and utopian visions of destroying imperial forces (J.
Ignjatovi).

Summary
The paper reexamines the interrelation between culture and social reality, as well as
the one between social crisis and the crisis of contemporary Serbian literature. By using
Danilo Kis work as a paradigmatic framework in regard to the social and historical reality, the paper highlights the social incompatibility characteristic of Kis poetics today, also
bringing attention to his testament claiming that without the transformations within the
realm of the poetical no genuine literary insight is to be attained and no critical distance
is to be assumed toward social phenomena. Serbian literature today, affirming the myth
of Danilo Ki, thus remaining within the anachronic plane, is not able to respond to the
reality of the social present.

Summary
The paper inquires into the psychological aspects of torture by means of comparative
analysis of characters in J. M. Coetzees Waiting for the Barbarians and Vuk Drakovis
The Prayer. The authors approach the issue from various angles, exploring psychological
profiles of torturers, their abettors, and torture victims. Further, the practice of torture is
linked to the questions of guilt and culpability, the key theoretical basis being Karl Jaspers
division of guilt into four categories: criminal, political, moral and metaphysical guilt
(Jaspers 1999). The paper examines whether torturers and witnesses of torture feel guilt or
remorse, why torture has been ubiquitous in the history of mankind, and what the effects
of torture on the psychology of individuals/groups are.

ON BARBARIANS IN THE TIME OF (POST)COLONIALISM

Summary
The paper aims to shed light on Aime Cesaires essay Discourse on Colonialism (1950)
written after the Second World War, at the time of decolonization and revolt in many
country outside the European continent. Cesaire treatise on colonialism is one of the first
texts that openly deals with colonialism and its concequences, and certainly a key text
for what we now call postcolonial critisicm. Paradoxically, considering the importance
of this text for the postcolonial theory and criticism, it didnt receive the full attention it
deserved. Only after Cesaire, on the list of postcolonial studies could be written in Fanon,
Memmi, Achebe, Said, Ngugi, and others. Discourse on Colonialism also represents a
kind of guide through the colonial history of Europe, which openly and without restraint
exposes the hypocrisy of Western culture and the true nature of the colonization. Considering the situation, more than a half century later, we are in the position to conclude that
this text is still current. The instruments were improved, disguised colonialism continued
exploitation of raw material and humilate the population of so-called Third World.
There has been a progressive dehumanization, a legacy that leaves nothing but corruption, violence and barbarism.

Heathrow Syndrome as liminality metaphor in Borislav Pekis novel

Summary
By analyzing the use-value of the term liminality within the field of humanities, the paper
offers a critical reexamination of Turners anthropological theory concerning the behavior
of human subjects and societies in the liminal stage of transition process. Further revalorization of the mentioned theory from the viewpoint of Foucaults, Virilios and Baudrillards philosophical hypotheses, opens up the possibility to reinterpret Borislav Pekis
novel Besnilo within the context of contemporary worlds idiosyncrasies governed by the
logics and politics of mondialisation. Hence, the paper attempts to offer an answer to the
question whether Pekis literary representation of Heathrow International Airport could
function as a metaphor for acute destabilization of individual, collective and global identity.

Summary
Given Paul Virillios hypothesis that relativity represents the single remaining entity to
be interpreted, one of the principal goals of the paper is to illustrate to which extent the
aforementioned hypothesis is most profoundly manifest in the discourse itself. Using the
collection of essays The Tree of History by Svetislav Basara the paper ponders over the
evolution of apocalyptic discourse, from the traditional and Christian myths, to (pseudo)
mythologies of the New World System. The notion of system relates to both, modes of
interpreting the contemporary social and political phenomena in the world and the Balkans, and the production of new modes for discourse manipulation within the cultural
and ideological context, as well as in the context of all the more acute interrelation between theory, literature and ideology.

Summary
The paper examines the thesis that the apparently critical attitudes of dystopian literature towards contemporary, real society and ideology are in fact counter-critical or
non-critical. The thesis is analyzed within a theoretical and methodological framework
which breaks down into two parts: 1) the internal (analyzing the idea of non-criticalness
of (dystopian) literature in the context of the internal realities of dystopian fiction) and,
2) the external (approaching the concept of non-criticalness of (dystopian) literature
within a larger context of the way in which socio-ideological subjects, i.e., readers, function within the real society and ideology. By means of building on the existing body of

theoretical and critical reactions to the idea and / or ideas akin to the concept of noncriticalness of (dystopian) literature, as well as by means of relating this concept with the
relevant philosophical thinking of the question / problem of (im)possibility of critique of
ideology (Peter Sloterdijk and Slavoj iek), the paper comes to the conclusion which favors the initial thesis that the effect of (dystopian) literature is counter-critical, or even
non-critical, and goes on to suggest the necessity of bringing into question the very possibility / practicability of social and / or ideological critique in (dystopian) literature.

Summary
The paper studies the procedure that Antonije Isakovic uses in his book of short stories
Ferns and Fire to transfor a group into a literary character. The term group is used as a
term superior to community or mass as forms of group expression whose psychosocial
specificities are examined. Comparative analysis of group heroes (used in social psychology and in this paper as a hyponymic term to denote a group) shows that each group consists of individuals whose psychosocial characteristics give the basis to group dynamics as
a whole, that is, individuals are beings with a hundred legs and a hundred arms belonging to the community and made of human nuclei that can never be reduced to impersonal
elements.

The paper investigates the correlation between the tragic and the comic, determining the
role of comedy as a socially engaged form and the comic as a theatrical dominant in the
age of transition. The aforementioned is explored by using the examples of the plays performed in Knjaevsko-srpski Teatar in Kragujevac at JoakimFest, the festival of the best

Summary
The paper analyzes the aspects of the meta-theatrics in the context of social criticism as
portrayed in the play The Claustrophobic Comedy by Dusan Kovacevic. Using a specific
dramatic form of play-within-a-play, Kovacevic renders a world in which crisis is a permanent state of the spirit, both of an individual and society as a whole. Meta-theatrics
in such a world plays a critical role, not only in the context of re-thinking the nature
and function of dramatic presentation, but also in a broader sense in the analysis of the
perpetual drama of the social reality. In this context, Kovacevics re-examination of the
causes and effects of the social crisis discloses the mechanisms behind an imposed identity
in order to develop an emancipated and constructive social consciousness.

THE FUNCTION OF IDEALIZATION IN CULTURAL DIPLOMACY

Summary
The paper deals with cultural diplomacy as a two-way communication process which
includes: 1. attempts to present the image of a country and its values to other countries
and peoples, 2. receiving information and aspirations to understand other cultures and
culture generally speaking, as well as the values and concepts of other countries and their
peoples. We shall treat a literary work whose content, meaning, ideas and composition
is precisely to be identified as a cultural and diplomatic move: Hagiography of Stefan
Deanski by Gregory Camblak. We shall demonstrate the specific role of arts and cultural diplomacy constituting the factors that affect public consciousness in international
relations, by using a work of art (hagiography of the king) as a universal language which
overcomes the boundaries and linguistic differences, thus representing a transferred mode
of ideas and ideals (Christian ones, in this case). We shall demonstrate the way the author
successfully communicates with the public in a foreign country. The actual communication between the Bulgarian writer and Serbian people is not just a mere exchange of information, on a rational, but on an emotional level as well, which, from a deeper temporal
perspective, yields mutual respect and understanding.

su se vijesti irile na drukiji nain nego to se to ini danas, deseteraka
pjesma, k tomu publicirana u pukome kalendaru, lijepo je mogla
udovoljiti potrebi saznavanja o dogaajima na razliitim bojinicama
na kojima su ratovali Slavonci. Traiti umjetniku vrijednost u takvim
sastavcima bespredmetno je budui da je njihova funkcija iskljuivo
prikazivaka: istaknuti uspjehe hrvatskih regimenti, pobrojati ugledne
asnike, navesti broj poginulih neprijatelja, utroenih topovskih zrna
i sl. S jakom izvanknjievnom zadaom, s kronoloki strukturiranom
naracijom, s vie no oskudnim stilskim uresima podrijetlom iz
folklorne epike [...], sa stereotipno slikom sotoniziranoga protivnika, s
konvencionalnim uvodom i obraanjem kozarake Vile te datacijskom
klauzulom [...], s katalogom proslavljenih kapetana, obrestara i
obristlietnanata, s upletanjem sintagmi u funkciji ohrabrivanja vlastitog
tabora [...], svojevrsnim loci communes slavonske osamnaestotoljetne
epike s temama suvremenih ratova. Pisma od slavne regimente gradike
tipian je proizvod jednoga vremena u kojemu je naracija u stihu na sebe
preuzimala neliterarne kompetencije, ona je odraz ne Stojanovievih
slabih pesnikih snaga, nego svijesti o itateljskim potrebama i pravilima

njegova bijae. Ako je vojevao ili na koji grad udario, Bogu najprije
sebe i vojsku priporuivi jest vojevati poeo. Odkuda nije se uditi
da toliku sriu dostie, da vojvoda sve cesarske vojske postade, da
junatvo u svakoj skoro prigodi i dogadjaju ukaza. Ugodan i ljubezan
bio je Bogu svojemu i zato je blagosov i sriu veliku od Boga primio.

Summary
This paper analyzes the presence of the Eastern Question and Austro-Russo-Turkish War
(1787-1791/1792) in South Slavic literatures in the eighteenth century. This is the social
crisis that among the South Slavs produced more than twenty literary texts, both in verse
and in prose, that describe the war (in part or entirely). In their writings Croats and Serbs
had to face several questions and concepts: the importance of war for the liberation of
South Slavs, the praise of the Austrian Emperor and the Empress of Russia, the praise of
military leaders, or negative aspects of the enemy, Christian forces against Muslim forces,
Europe and Asia, russophilia, austrophilia, Pan-Slavism.

Common Theme of Serbian Church Literature and Serbian Painting of the
First Half of the 18th Century

Summary
The paper examines the Old Testament story of Joseph the All-Comely, which entered
the Serbian tradition in the 18th century; in 1741 the story appeared in the form of an
Apocrypha edited by G. S. Venclovi, almost at the exact same time when it appeared in
the form of a fresco ensemble, painted in 1735 in the Draa Monastery, whose notable
patron was ber Captain Sinia Markovi Mlatiuma. Authors of the paper draw
parallels between the literary model and the artistic rendering, as well as parallels
between collective and individual suffering during social crises.
