Series: Facing the Giants Message: Poison Envy

Barry Hinkle 03/02/14

James 3:14-16 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.

Envy is a sin of comparison

Envy often leads to: Broken relationships Shattered families Ministries destroyed/ divided
Numbers 12:2-3 (NIV) "Has the LORD spoken only through Moses?" they asked. "Hasnt he also spoken through us?" And the LORD heard this.

Envy only hurts the person who is envious

Envy definition - a painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with the desire to possess the same advantage. A feeling of antagonism towards someone because of some good which he is enjoying but which one does not have oneself. "I defy you to show me an envious man who is a happy man" ~ Billy Graham
Ecclesiastes 4:4 (NIV) And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one persons envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Envy blames God

1 Chronicles 29:12 Both riches and honor come from You, And You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; In Your hand it is to make great And to give strength to all.

Envy ought to have no place allowed it in the heart of man; for the goods of this present world are so low and vile that they are beneath it, and those of the future world are so vast and exalted that they are above it. ~ Charles Caleb Colton
