Sound Designer Profile

Naughty Dogs The Last of Us

Im a gamer and after seeing the making of The Last of Us, and how Naughty Dog sound designers make sounds it really took my interest because we have been making sounds in the exact same way: messing around with your voice, objects, instruments etc In the video The Sound and Music of The Last of Us below the music team behind the game talk about how the sound makes the game. Derrick Espino (Senior Sound Designer) talks about how they went to Rio to record doors, rusty gates, rusty metals and they found old buildings too (6:30) He also says how a recording of some chickens ends up being the sound for rats after they speed it up. If anyones played the game youd know that the sounds throughout create the atmosphere and emotions for you, especially when you hear the clicking of the clickers (infected humans with no eyesight, but use hearing for guiding themselves about) you know youre in trouble and you begin to crouch everywhere (thats what I did). To achieve this sound an actress Kristy Lee (8:00) ended up just breathing in until she made this high pitch screeching noise and to achieve a male interpretation Phillip Kovats (Audio Lead) did the same effect of which Kristy Lee did to get the female version. Gustavo Santaolalla started writing songs at the age of 10 and soon after formed his own band, of which he got a record deal at the age of 16. After getting in contact with various different people he began working on music for films and from hearing his work Neil Druckmann (Creative Director) got in touch and asked if he would do the music for the game. Gustavo Santaolalla ended up creating the theme tune for the game which makes the audience feel emotions towards the game and characters.
