Silent may seem sweet but it can lead to sorrow Iambic pentameter- the usual meter for a sonnet Waste is a strong word for misuse Dactylic trimeter- the meter is almost drowsy like the tone of sadness and sorrow Personification- death cannot own a night This shows the poet is a strong man who does not cry often so these memories are powerful enough to make a tough man cry
B I summon up remembrance of things past, A I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought, B And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste:

C Then can I drown an eye, unused to flow, D For precious friends hid in death's dateless night, C And weep afresh love's long since cancelled woe, D And moan the expense of many a vanished sight: E Then can I grieve at grievances foregone,
