Calculate the Simple Payback for a solar hot water heater for your home, replacing an electric hot water heater. SP = IC/(AKWH * $/kwh) $2,000/(4000 kWh/yr * 0.08 $/kWh) = 2,000/320 = 6.25 years. SP = 2,000/400 = 5 years SP = 2,000/(320 - [2000 * 0.05]) = 2,000/(320 - 100) = 9.1 years

4. Calculate the Cost of Energy (use Eq. 10.3) for a PV system for your home which would supply 60% of your electric needs. PV system is connected to the grid. www.southwestPV.com has information on complete systems. AKWH = 5.88 kWh/day * 365 days/yr = 2146.2 kWh/yr IC = $9,026 FCR = 0.105 AOM = $15/yr COE = (9,026*0.105 + 15)/2146.2 = $0.45/kWh

8. Calculate the Cost of Energy for a PV standalone system with batteries which would supply 100 kWh/month. Use Eq. 10.4 and assume batteries would be replaced every 7 years. Use 25 year lifetime. COE = ((IC*FCR)+AOM+LRC)/AEP $200 replacement every 7 years 25 years = $714.29 1200 annual kWh/month

COE = ((9000*0.105)+180+714.29)/1200 COE = 1.532

11. What are today's values for fuel inflation, discount rate, interest rate? What is your estimate, average/yr between now and the year 2025? Inflation rate is at 7% Discount rate is around 10% Interest rate is around 4 to 5% Inflation and interest rate will rise around 2% and the discount rate will lower around 2 or 3%
