Chapter 3: Promoting and Recruiting for Choral Success Kenneth H. Phillips 2004

Chapter 3 of the textbook deals with how essential recruitment is to choral music programs, and how proper promotion of the choir can increase interest among possible future members. Phillips ideas for the tools that can be used to help in promotion were excellent. One thing that I would have liked to add to his list of tools is maintaining a website for the choral program. I also liked the idea of a choir newsletter that could be sent to members of the community through mailing or email. The newsletter is an excellent way to help keep parents informed and I will most definitely be using it in some form for my future choirs. I also liked the long-term suggestions Phillips has for recruiting members, such as laying the foundation in elementary classrooms and building a good rapport with athletic coaches. I have seen first hand the benefits that these types of relationships and long term strategies can have, and plan to focus a lot of attention to this in my own choral program.
