NON-TARIFF BARRIERS IN FOREIGN TRADE: WITH EXAMPLES OF TURKISH-EUROPEAN UNION TRADE ABSTRACT This study aims to explain the

issue of non-tariff barriers in foreign trade which particularly emerged after 1970s and grew rapidly within the global economy, based on examples of Turkey- European nion trade! The study is composed of three parts! The first part analyses the issue theoretically and talks about the progress of protectionism in foreign trade together with alternati"e ideas on free trade theory! #ew protectionism which is different than the traditional protectionism is mentioned later on in the chapter! The second part discusses the conser"ation tools of new protectionism$ non-tariff barriers and their methods of measurement within the contemporary literature! The third part explores the de"elopment of non-tariff barriers as foreign trade restriction measures, analy%ed with a "iewpoint of both Turkish and European within the final section of the third chapter! The results of this study demonstrate that non-tariff barriers' co"erage ratio of European nion on its imports from the world was (!79 ) in *00*! +o"erage ratio is the ratio of the total "alue of imports of each commodity sub,ect to non-tariff barriers to aggregated import "alue of that commodity group! The *00- data obtained from the European +ommission .arket /ccess 0atabase indicate that European exporters complained about Turkey on *0 occasions, that there were non-tariff barriers imposed on its imports! /n econometric model used on the a"ailable data within the study yielded significant results!
