LESSON PLANS Subject__6th Grade Science___Date___10/29/2013_ Period __Block 1, 2, 3__ Standards:

Grade Band Theme: Order and Organization Strand Topic: Cellular to Multicellular Strand: All matter is made of small particles called atoms. The properties of matter are based on the order and organization of atoms and molecules. Cells, minerals, rocks and soil are all examples of matter. Physical Science Grade 6 Topic: Matter and Motion Content Statement: All matter is made up of small particles called atoms. All matter is made of atoms, which are particles that are too small to be seen, even with a light microscope. There is empty space between the atoms that make up a substance. An element is a chemical substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances. Lesson Goal: Students will be able to - Name the 3 states of matter and their properties - Classify examples of the 3 states of matter Anticipatory Set: Students will start the class off with a DSW 2. Instructional Strategies: Desks grouped in rows and exit slips Materials: Pencil Handouts Eno Board Post-It Notes Flip-Book Laptop Activities: DSW 2 (Daily Science Work) 3 States of Matter classifying activity Post it note and Venn diagram- Students will be given a post it note with an example of a type of matter and then they will classify their examples into any category they see fit (I didnt give them the 3 states of matter as the category at first). Then as a class we will sort the examples into the three states of matter. 3 States of Matter Flip-book- Students will complete a flip-book with the characteristics and examples of the three states. 3 States of Matter pg. 17 Exit slip Accommodations for Special Learners: Students with IEPs are located in back, front, or on the ends of rows in the classroom so the Special Ed teacher has easier access to them (this is done by her request) Students with vision problems are seated in the front of the classroom

Assessment (formal or informal): Teacher Observation- walking around to make sure students stay on task Written assignments- non graded Class Discussion- Classifying activity Randomly calling upon students for answers to ensure they are staying on task and focused Graded assignment- pg. 11 3 States of Matter Reflection: Students will be given the opportunity to find relationships between different things/objects (3 states of matter examples) Students will be able to classify different examples of the 3 states of matter Exit slip? Pg 17 Grade
